I ventured to the maths building today. It's very tall.

1. Isn't Southampton really good for Engineering? My uncle is a fellow or something and whenever I see him he goes on for ages about how good it is, but then again he would be biased.

2.Jesters

3. Nice city, not too big not too small.

4. Reasonably cheap to live in

5. Lovely campus in general (maths building not so much!)

6. SU is pretty good, lots of stuff going on.

7.Good choice of accomodation, good mix of what's on offer and good price range.

8. Southampton very focused on Graduate Recruitment (compared to Cardiff certaintly, whenever I see my brother he raids the Soton Graduate Recruitment site as most unis have nothing nearly so good).

9. Sports are pretty good here.

10. Ditto societies, there's a society for pretty much everything, and if there isn't you can start your own soc very easily.

11. Jesters.

This all said without any idea of what Sheffield offers btw, didn't look at the uni there.

Thanks for this haha

Cardiff was actually going to be my 2nd choice, after Sheffield/Southampton - should I be turned off by the low(?) graduate prospects?

the maths building is a sin. There's a little viewpoint thingy in mountbatten (on our rooftop garden), and it would've been perfect, had the view not been the maths building.

Oh and DarrenDM, if you're going for one of the electrical-type engineerings, the facilities definitely count as one good reason. They're amazing.

I'm going to study Civil Engineering and I understand Southampton is very good with that as well.
I visited Sheffield and it was a nice place and university, with a great engineering building. But I think a campus uni will appeal to me more - so I am thinking of replacing it with Southampton.

Still unsure at the moment though. Anything to sway me will be great, but of course I'll talk to some Sheffield people too.

Ah, right. yes, it's great for civil too. Southampton's not exclusively a campus uni, though. (Although it effectively is, but it's not).

You should put both down..
Could anyone recommend me the cheapest way to get to Portsmouth?

Train with railcard or potentially a greyhound bus in advance.

I quite like this year's Freshers.

Just went to play poker with one of the flats in Selborne. :teeth:

The GerSoc freshers are hilarious. At the social last week we actually had all of them singing "I'm GerSoc til I die" at the top of their voices

The freshers in the society which I'm social sec for are great. We were playing I have never and some of the oldies were ganging up on someone, at which point the freshers started asking for some things to gang up on the same person. Then they just asked for all the society gossip so over the rest of the evening I told them everything I could think of... they have since used it (where appropriate) at all our meetings. Very amusing!

Beth and Marcus, I was talking more about on here than in general! All Freshers i've met in person have been lovely!
I knew about this a couple of days ago from a few of my 2nd-year Med friends, but in case you haven't yet heard:

I'm not actually sure, but I just know my brother has had no support from his department or from the uni in general with graduate recruitment. He did Music though, Engineering may be different. At Southampton we have like a database of graduate employment opportunities, so when I last saw him he asked to raid it through my Soton account haha, apparently Cardiff doesn't have that :s-smilie:

Also that email is HILARIOUS.

Asda in Eastleigh are recruiting - city centre might be too? Worth a look at least as you get discount on your groceries!

argh all these lines are making me crazy. I'll be surprised if I don't admit myself into an asylum before the year is out.

[that the 2nd year's a 'jump' is not an exaggeration. It's more like an understatement. Especially for my course.]

This is true. I bet my fourth year will be immensely exciting. And now, finally, to bed, for 5-6 hours. Joy.
The jump from my third year to my fourth has been unbelievable, both in the difficulty of content and the quantity we have to do.

Wish I was still a second-year. :moon:
