Hi, I was looking people's opinion on Southampton. What it's like to live in? I heard it's very good for mature students? (i'm 25) I currently have an offer from soton for civil engineering and am debating what to do. I have heard that the uni is great but the city itself is pretty poor. Or to quote someone the other day; "It's a hole"! Don't know what to take from that? I visited Cardiff the other week and absolutely loved the city, although the Uni could have been better. Also I am hoping for an offer from Nottingham, so I have a choice to make soon. Although before I make my decision, I will visit just to make my own mind up, after all it is the next 4 years of my life

I personally really like it. To me it feels like a collection of small villages all linked together which make up the city as a whole. As students we tend to stick to the Highfield and Portswood villages but that's fine. I also quite like the industrialisation of the dock area, it just looks cool! Otherwise, there's a lot of green space which I enjoy. There are a lot of traffic lights but you get used to that! In the city there are your standard spattering of chain shops etc. and you can get quickly and easily around and to places like Bournemouth, London, Reading and so on with cheap and quick train/coach links. As for nightlife - it's fine, you can go s****y or you can go to Jesters and everything in between.
Have you been down to visit? If you do I would just get a bus ticket and have an explore around the city too as you'll get a good idea of if you like it quite quickly.
(Also, I absolutely hated Cardiff when I went there so each to their own).
You should be ok, I've not been out as early as 7am (I usually go out about 8ish if I go for a run) but there are lots of other people there. If you keep to the main paths you should be ok.
I have no idea as to the exam timetable - there's usually a good accurate one which goes out around facebook (no idea where it initially comes from) but I would suggest you'll be done within the first 2 weeks - there don't tend to be many exams in the last week.
Oki dokey, thanks. Remind me when the first week is again?

I don't think there's much wrong with the city centre. Sure there are some dodgy areas like every large city and yes, there is a fair amount of crime but I don't expect Southampton stands out far beyond other cities its size. You have to allow for the fact that it is a dock but as hothedgehog said, I think the dock is quite nice for a dock (and all the big cruise liners are in and out every day, if you're into that kind of thing. ). The town centre in my opinion is great, particularly for shopping. And Highfield (where the main campus is) is pleasant - you have Southampton Common and the campus itself is nice. I certainly wouldn't say it's a "hole."
Ha ha... my housemate has a friend from America over at the moment. They went to Jesters last night, they got back in at about 11pm absolutely ****faced... the morning's result is equally as amusing.
Yeah I was writing that and unfortunately we were overloaded with views. Have upgraded the host now so we shouldn't have that problem again, so stick with us in future for all things Southampton!!!

I'm forever making terrible jokes to Luke for potential inclusion.
