Southampton should also promote their Malaysian campus more. It'd attract a lot of students who'd want to do an exchange year in the far east.

Is it possible to do an exchange with the Malaysian campus though? I know the university is horrendous at advertising their Erasmus or other foreign exchange programmes.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't. One of our lecturers will now spend half the year here and half the year in Malaysia, so if the lecturers are allowed to go back and forth the students may also have that opportunity. Also a key thing when deciding whether an exchange should be implemented is whether or not the degree content at the foreign uni is of similar difficulty and standard to the uni of Southampton. As the Malaysian campus is part of university of Southampton, it can be expected that course structure would be very similar.

It's started a trend. Recently Warwick followed Southampton in having an international campus, albeit in America. They did say at their open day that selected students will have to opportunity to spend a year studying in a campus abroad.

With respect to the intakes, last yeathe uni 'accidentally' recruited 2-3 times the allocated number of students for mechanical engineering. It was a similar case for the other engineering disciplines so maybe they bought down the.engineering intake to the correct levels which affected the intake numbers.

Southampton should also promote their Malaysian campus more. It'd attract a lot of students who'd want to do an exchange year in the far east.

Accidentally meaning lets see how many undergrads we can stuff into tutorials and labs together before the walls burst. :P

hey,
i'm trying to sort out a vague budget and i was wondering how many weeks you are actually living at uni (discounting the 4 weeks at easter and christmas). I think it's about 32 weeks but im not sure and hoping someone could tell me.

Thanks

Excluding Freshers week and looking purely at term time where you have to be at the university, I think this should be roughly right:

Semester 1 Thursday 27 September 2012 - Saturday 26 January 2013
Christmas Vacation Sunday 16 December 2012 - Sunday 6 January 2013
--> Term 1 (Up to Christmas): 12 weeks
--> Term 2 (Up to end of Semester 1): 3 weeks
--> Total Semester 1: 15 weeks

Semester 2 Monday 28 January 2013 - Saturday 15 June 2013
Easter Vacation Sunday 17 March 2013 - Sunday 14 April 2013
--> Term 2 (Up to Easter): 7 weeks
--> Term 3 (Up to end of Semester 2): 8 weeks
--> Total Semester 2: 15 weeks

If you really want to, you can usually get away for a week between semester 1 and semester 2, and leave after your last exam in semester 2 to cut down another couple of weeks, although you're supposed to still be around.

You're basically looking at about 30 core weeks you have to be around, then anything else is additional (freshers, sticking around after exams, sticking around over the holidays)

Depends on the bursary and whether any applicable circumstances have changed.

I received bursaries in every single year I was at Southampton - one in each year based on academic performance at A-Level, and a further bursary in my final year for doing the 4-year Masters course.

I was also awarded a 'hardship bursary' in my second year based on my home income, though I don't know if the University still does it (I'd assume it does).

Does UoS still have bursaries available based on A-Level results? Or is the only bursary available the fee reduction based on household income?

They've replaced bursarys with a fee reduction this year.

From next year you'll be able to choose whether you want it in cash or fee reduction though.

... we have a Malaysian campus? D:
Yeah... I'm not really sure why we do but apparently we do. University of Southampton should be in Southampton - I think that even having the Winchester School of Art is pushing it.

Whats wrong with a campus in a different place? With the Malaysian one, it allows people to study their first two years of engineering at Malaysia and then come to Southampton for the final two.
I just don't see the point in it. If people want to study at UoS then they should do their degree at the UoS. If you met someone who was an alumni you'd say to them 'oh, did you go to jesters' (or something equally Southamptonish) for them to turn around and tell you that they didn't study in Southampton... how is that a degree from UoS?

Have they announced who's performing at the freshers ball yet?

Edit: Just saw it, we rarely seem to get anyone decent. Who the hell wants to listen to Chipmunk.
