Why would someone do this?

Hi

I’ve moved to a new area and suggested meeting up with someone I met who lives in the same area. They gave me their mobile number and I have messages recently to arrange to meet up, but they are taking days to reply and claim to have plans when I suggest meeting. I don’t understand why someone would bother to give me their number if they have no interest.

They could genuinely be busy, ask them what day they are free so you can meet up with them on that day.

Hope this helped!

Out of politeness?

The above two answers are very good possibilities.

I know it’s a bit frustrating but the main thing is not to get annoyed at them - that sentiment doesn’t help at all and it certainly doesn’t endear you to them or make you more likely to eventually meet up. If you think they’re messing you around, just walk away.

I agree with the above only I'd put "politeness" in inverted commas cos that is not being polite, that is being a ****.

They say they’ve got plans for the next few weekends. They did offer to meet up one evening. I’d like to as I don’t really know anyone yet and would like to get to know them better, but it seems difficult to pin down a specific date. I’m mindful that one sided friendships don’t work.
