Does anyone understand how appendices in an illustrated report work? I'm struggling to provide things that 'support' my main body of text opposed to giving extra information which isn't allowed.

Yes. You place something to illustrate at the end of the documents (after the reference page) with the topic (Appendices) then number them in chronological order. Now, in the main body, you will be referring to a particular appendix using a specific number.
