Paulo Coelho “The Alchemist” is a fictional fabrication reflecting (mirror reflecting) significant events in the author’s life. The book documents the journey of a male stalwart Andalusian protagonist named Santiago who is engaging in achieving his legend/goals. His legend revolves around obtaining the love of Fatima, a “Desert” woman, and discovering a treasure. The “Alchemist” spreads the perception of being able to achieve personal legend, however certain aspects of the book indirectly address the factors to the widespread perception of the inability of women to achieve the personal goals or legends. Although it’s arguable that “the alchemist” present’s the idea of a social construct among the subject of pursuing goals, marginalizing women as inferior and dictating them to have no say in pursuing their own journey. Additionally, “The Alchemist” indirectly highlights how women are expected to explicitly deny their own sense of personal journey and should provide effort in other aspects of their life, distancing themselves from a sense of goal or personal legend instead of pursuing them.Further extension can be made to the contemporary middle eastern culture, which Paulo Coelho sets this story to be in. This culture is extensively recognized to normalize the scarcity of gender equality and confines women to be met with harsh and degrading treatment, restrictions and expectations. Women that are surrounded by this cultural upbringing often amount to have little success in achieving their dreams or completely overlook them.
