Which ion does N1BH4 release? What's that ion likely to do when mixed with an acid? Afterall, what do acids contain?

I thought NaBH4 is usually used as a source of hydride ions or as a reducing agent. normally for organics? Only thing I can think of is that it releases hydrogen gas, but not 100% sure!
