How to set up your own user group and what you can do on there , eg is it just a message board or a private forum?

Just to check, do you mean a usergroup or a social group?

Anyone can create a social group on TSR but user groups all have a specific purpose and are very tricky to handle

Apologies for the delay.
Usergroups are fixed groups created by the staff at TSR HQ. Many of them are only controlled by the Community Staff (e.g. I am in the Volunteer Team usergroup which has a fixed set of permissions within the forum). A small number of usergroups exist for anybody to join:

Though several of these have not been used in years so there is little merit in joining some of them.

Social groups can be set up by anyone and there are hundreds on the site:

Essentially, they are just a list of users who all share a common interest in that thing. In some cases, these social groups would have chat threads dedicated to that particular interest.

Does this help?
