I edited a 4000 word essay of mine into a 2000 word. The art is to make sure the key argument is there while get rid of the peripheries.

I'm possibly going to apply for the January gathered field (yes, last minute, I know) and if it goes through the school of Archaeology, they need essays - but all the archaeology essays I did this term (the ones that were any good, anyway...) were utterly epic - 3800 words in some cases! Cutting them is just going to make them look a bit stupid, I fear...

I had trouble with that too. In the end I did not edit it, but as there were four main parts in it, I left out two completely, and summarised them in two sentences in the introduction. (The introduction was basically me stating when and for what module I wrote the original essay and what the title was.) I doubt that the sample written work weighs in so heavily anyway, orielhistorian once assured me that they only need it so they have proof that you can write and reference. (Which I'm sure you can!) :smile:

Does anyone think Oxford will mind if I reuse the transcripts I sent to Leicester, and that Leicester subsequently returned? It's only 10 days til the next closing date (which I have to make) and the tutorial office are saying 2-3 weeks for any official letters...

As long as Leicester didn't spill any tea over it or do other nasty things with it, I don't see why you shouldn't reuse it. After all, it isn't as though transcripts had to be submitted in sealed envelopes or anything...

I don't think it matters. I used Harvard referencing at any rate.

They don't care. Honest. They realise that different universities use different styles, so they'd be silly to take that into account. As long as it's consistent, any style of referencing should be fine.

I remember reading on their guidance sheets and it says that you can submit an extract, i think that's better than trying to cut it down to 2000 words.

I just reread the guidance notes and it says the PS should be a page long :O mine is exactly 2 pages long, about 1,400 words. Is this too long?

what course are you applying for? It depends on your faculty, for example the law faculty accepts 2-paged long PS.

No, mine was over a page
Although 1400 does seem a bit excessive.

Hi Angelil.

I'm just preparing to submit my Oxford application online tomorrow or the day after.

I'm going to apply for an MPhil in International Relations with a predicted First, and my college choices are Merton and New College.

I've just managed to get a PS together this morning. I don't really have lots of experience when it comes to postgraduate application PSs.

Could I be rude (since I don't know you) and ask you to have a look at it and give me your thoughts. It would be IMMENSELY helpful.

Hi Angelil, I just got rejected by my first choice college Christ Church and am now being considered by my second choice New College. I was wondering if you had any thoughts regarding New College and how good/bad a choice it is for postgrads.

I don't think any choice is a 'bad' choice for postgrads unless it really lacks in a generally convivial postgraduate community. My college, LMH, has what I feel is an especially good one, but I know next to nothing about New College.

Hey did anyone here have to submit essays with their application? I have to submit two, im just wondering, they specify 2000 words, does this include the bibliography and footnotes? Also does it matter if it was like 2200 or something silly like that? These are supervision essays and im not sure what to cut from them....if anything i added things to make them seem better :o:

Of course it doesn't include the bibliography. 2200 words is fine, it says this somewhere on the website. Just be sensible.
