Has anyone received their fresher's pack?

I got an email from Ox today about registering, but it said all the info was in the fresher's pack - which I don't have!

Hi,

It depends on your college. I've received mine but there were no sign-on credentials in it as Balliol opted for these being emailed to its members by OUCS.

I had my User ID/pwd for a week now but I still can't activate my account and the OUCS help center hasn't solved it yet...
I emailed them using the form provided through the link in that email; they were able to help me out as they said that I didn't receive the activation code because I already had an account from last year. They just reactivated my old account for me to update those details and so now I am all set. If you don't have your code, I would definitely recommend emailing them. Good luck!
Hi people...due to relocation snags I'm having to defer entry to next year (or reapply, rather, as my faculty doesnt offer automatic deferral).

Just wanted to wish all you Oxford-bound postgrads all the best and....Im green with envy!
For the Fresher's Pack: I didn't receive one either (Lincoln College) but I received a mail with an PDF which contained registration instructions and the activation code.

Wow, I'm sorry for you, even more if you really have to reapply next year. What went so wrong with relocation if I may ask?
Ok - this may be the stupidest question ever, BUT... I want to order my bedding ahead of time and have it delivered to my house in Oxford. Can all the Uk-ers here direct me to what stores in the UK have quality goods and online ordering? I have been to Primark before, and while they are great for cheap clothes, I like my bedding to be soft and good quality.

Have you tried Marks and Spencer?

John Lewis is pretty good, so is The White Co if you dont mind paying a bit more.

Marks and Spencers, John Lewis or Next would be my choices. It's a shame there's no Dunelm in Oxford, since they generally have cheap, brightly coloured Coloroll bedlinen.

This was perfect. Thank You !

I've heard that cell phone/mobile service at Oxford is a bit sketchy, so any recommendations for a particular service provider. I am thinking of getting a pay-as-you-talk service from a kiosk at heathrow (if i could find any).

For running 110V appliances, I will be getting this voltage converter. Can you guys have a look and tell me if the adapter plugs will work with UK receptacles/sockets.

That looks about right. I know that the UK uses two different types of plugs, a standard plug and an electric shaver plug (which I think is the big one).

Yup, that'll be fine diddly  Mainly use the big one with 3 pins. As rmn002 says, you do occasionally use a 2 pin one for stuff like toothbrush and razor chargers but that all depends on whether you have a chargeable toothbrush and razor (both of mine are battery operated for example)
Can I ask - how big of a deal is Freshers week for us graduate students?

From what I hear, if you think booze is a big deal, then yea - Freshers week is a big deal. Other than that, no clue...

Question about MCRs!
So I don't know if this varies by college, but I was reading the college handbook (St Hugh's) and it said that 1) there are MCR subscriptions, which apparently is some kind of MCR fee and 2) "MCR membership is free".

??? Could anyone shed some light? Better yet, any St Hugh's MCR members out there who could explain this mystery to me?

Membership is free, because you become a member as soon as you join the college, but subs are there to help to increase the MCR budget, so they can organise events which cost money - as almost all of them do, whether it's for buying food for an MCR picknick or hiring security for a bop. JCR members normally pay subs as well.

At Wadham, JCR subs were ~£10 for the year, and I think Keble MCR wanted £40/year, I'd imagine that Hugh's MCR subs will lie somewhere between the two.

Just thought I'd say hello to all other Oxford postgrads about to start in October - I'm v. nervous but should hopefully be ok...even though I haven't done much work over the holidays! :s-smilie: I'm starting to gather my things together now - I feel like an undergrad all over again!!
