Oxford graduate applicants 2009/2010

Scroll to see replies

Hey everyone,
I just got accepted into the MSc. in Modern Chinese Studies (still shaking in disbelief & happiness ^_^ ) and was wondering who else got in?

As to Bkfn's question, I am an American student with a decent gpa (3.8 ish I don't know what that translates as in the British system), but my current college is definitely not as uh 'prestigious' as many in the US (darn it princeton...ironically my best friend goes there). But I did do a study abroad here and now am really excited to be coming back as a full student. I have to admit, I look forward to actually borrowing books from the libraries and not being tied to the photocopy machine. But best of luck to everyone in the process and kudos to all those who have already suceeded!!

As a short question, is there anyone who has received news (i.e. good/bad) from their colleges? I seem to be stuck in a radio silence.

These things can take ages - I applied at the end of Nov 06, got an offer March 1st 07, and didn't hear my college choice until June (I think). So just hang in there folks!

As for the person who wrote a 4-page PS...what on earth did you put in it?!

Too much, apparently.

I wrote about surviving a hurricane and its aftermath, and how the most difficult challenge was water supply and water sanitation, and how that inspired my application. I applied on-line, and only noticed the 2,000 word limit for on-line submittals, without noticing the 1-page limit in the Notes of Guidance. So I'm an idiot.

Don't like the wait either and I've been waiting no-where near as long as you :woo:

Just a horrible feeling of being in limbo and wish they'd hurry up.

Oxford emailed me back saying that apparently for Politics the deadline was January and not November, so I got it in early for no reason

Anyhow, seems like I'll be hearing the same time as you.

Congratulations on your offer! Ah, yes, I forsee quite a bit of a waiting time to get an answer from the colleges. I received my offer in Dec for a MSc and still not a word from either my top choices or any other college for that matter. I do remember reading somewhere on the prospectus that it does take a while, though, for college allocations. And anyways, what matters is the offer itself, right?

Well it doesn't say anything on the website, or in the notes to graduates. I'm not psychic

Just seems like typical Oxford.

What do you mean you're not psychic?

Have you applied for funding?
I had a telephone interview yesterday (taught MSc cource, Pharmacology). I think ist was a really challenging interview. Actually it was a lot more an oral exam. I really can't judge if I was good or bad and can't wait for an answer...
But I actually don't want to bother the deartment only one day after the interview how long a response will take...

Nope. You?

Nope. You?

Didn't know you could apply before getting an offer.

Congrats on the gold gem

New system - you apply (well for AHRC anyway) on the same form as your application. If you get an offer, you get put on the "to be considered for funding" pile. Uni then goes through said pile, picking those who they want to fund and submit those applicants to the AHRC, effectively removing the element of the open competition. I don't know whether the AHRC can still say no though? :dontknow:

But that's only for the universities that will be receiving BGP funding. Anywhere else, you have to go through the open competition

Ta for the congrats too

I just received my offer letter from the department, but in the letter it says:

" This offer is subject to the following conditions:
No academic conditions set for this offer and no further evidence of academic ability is required"

Does this mean I got an UNCONDITIONAL offer???
Are there going to be any further academic conditions set by the college accepting me?

Thanks!
Good luck to those still waiting!

Yes, assuming you've already provided evidence that your fees and other expenses will be paid for either by you or by some funding body / scholarship.
I mailed the department today about when to expect an answer but they didn't answer the mail yet.
Don't even know why I am so agitated about this application. :woo:

Thanks for your reply.
but what if I failed my 3rd year exam? can I still be able to read the course if I can pay all the fees? I still can't believe I got an unconditional offer....

Well, technically "no academic conditions" means just that - although I suspect you'd still need to hold an undergraduate degree in order to register for a postgraduate degree, so if failing your 3rd-year exam would actually result in your failing your entire course, they probably wouldn't be obliged to take you anyway...
