I was just curious, when did you get your college allocation? (I know you've graduated already, but the info would still help). Because I feel it's been ages since I got my offer, and there's no letter from any college in sight. Mh.

I got my offer March 1st 2007, and don't think I was allocated a college until at least June or July. So you're talking 3-4 months since you received the offer.

Of course they are, barely any undergraduates only spend eight weeks at university each term - just because lectures finish doesn't mean people don't stick around a bit to get work done.

Think people weren't really allowed to/able to at LMH - seemed like all the undergraduates got out in the last week of every term. Didn't seem like any stayed around really - even if they'd wanted to college was packed full of conference delegates as soon as they left so it may well have been impossible. College was definitely much quieter in the holidays. Perhaps it varies between colleges, though in Oxford I somehow doubt it (seems somehow busier than Cambridge, though admittedly I've only visited the latter once).

I went to St Hilda's today and have to say that it is actually really nice. Situated at the river with lovely views and a nice garden.

I'd be interested in which colleges you like best having lived in Oxford for some time.

I'd never heard of it before coming to Oxford but I really loved my own college, LMH. St Antony's is also beautiful and for some funny reason I also really like St Catz! Certainly the older and touristy colleges are lovely but the thought of constantly being deluged by tourists every time I stepped out of my stairwell would put me right off. I remember visiting Christchurch (because a friend of mine was visiting and wanted to go) at some innocuous time like a Tuesday afternoon, and there were people EVERYWHERE (this was even in school term times so it's not as if all the schoolkids were on holiday or anything). Nightmare.

I did a study abroad at Christ Church and they had a huge gift shop. That should say something about tourists. ^_^

That's pretty annoying :s-smilie:. Do you know if New College has a similar problem? Any thoughts about what the college is like for postgrads?
Has anyone out there applied to the Department of Social Policy and Social Work? If so, anyone heard yet?
So does the thickness, weight and dimensions of the post letter received from Oxford..... clue in on the decision inside???
I hope Ox gets back to us today via email coz this wait is realy starting to become unhealthy...
I emailed the graduate admissions office and had this back:

"The final decision-making deadline for departments in your admissions cycle was last Friday, March 20; you will be notified of the outcome of your application shortly via post. If you do not receive a letter regarding your application in the week commencing March 23 and urgently require a decision, we would recommend that you contact your department directly via e-mail. Please note that the Graduate Admissions office is not authorised to disclose departmental decisions, and we do not currently offer online or e-mail notification for graduate applications. "

To email or wait for snail mail?

Not necessarily; my acceptance letter was only a page long so my envelope was really thin and, overall, underwelming. I think if I didn't get an email before [which also almost gave me a heart attack because the actual email loaded slowly and all I could see for 3 minutes was I got an "exclamation point" email from the Oxford department] I would have been like :bawling: before I actually opened it and went  and then "yes!"

My letter was just 2 pages and when I saw it I thought I was rejected because it was so tiny (For admission I expected at least an XL envelope with all kinds of brochures, vouchers and information  ). I had to wait 10 min for someone to be at my side on opening the letter... but I could read some words through the "window" in the envelope which included "fees calculator".. No need for a fees calculator when ur accepted right?

It is a bit silly to have an online application system but no status checker. I hate the wait, but I have knots in my stomach when I think about emailing.

I just can't bring myself to do it.

But think about how much time we would have wasted continuously checking our status :p:

Sshhhhh you :p:

Might check my actual post first and then email. I might not. I might just go hibernate somewhere instead.

Not to intrude, but wouldn't it be more painless and swift if you just called the department? That's what a friend of mine did (for a biochemistry PhD). Got an answer there and then. Get it over with, pull the plaster off quickly instead of doing it slowly and prising the (hypothetical) hairs on your leg off excruciatingly and one by one.

Seriously, any decision will be better than more agonised waiting.

I could but the thought of being told, rather than reading a letter/email actually makes me feel sick

And my legs are hair free :p:

Lolzies, I'm sure they are-hence the 'hypothetical.' (I could only envision the somewhat grotesque visual metaphor by reference to my own semi-hairy pins, sorry).
