Oxford graduate applicants 2009/2010

Scroll to see replies

If any English applicants are interested, Ive just been informed by the dept that the acceptance rate was 1 in 7 for the MSt and 65-70% for the DPhil this year.

Small consolation though (aaaargh) for a reject like me.

I just phoned the history department. I got a conditional offer for DPhil History. They want me to get an average mark of 67 for my Masters, which is quite high!!

Ring them!

Congrats - that is high!

Well they've not replied to my email so maybe I will ring them. Is 01865 615000 the number?

Out of interest, would you say getting an average mark of 67 in your Masters at Oxford is similar to getting a 67 in the undergrad at Oxbridge?
Just had an email (a really badly written one at that) - big fat rejection.

Well I finally cracked and rang the history dept. about my Mst Medieval history application.

A very nice lady answered the phone and I was told that unfortunately they cannot accept everybody- so basically a no. It isn't that surprising considering how terrible my personal statement was though!

Oh well, I'm surprisingly unfussed. I thought I would be distraught, but I think that I was far more stressed about just finding out than the actual outcome.

At least I have a place at good ol' Brum. Perhaps it's best to stay with and what you know; especially when Birmingham is a good uni for history anyway.

:hugs:

Had a reply that I'd emailed the wrong person, and was told to email someone else. Have done so :afraid:

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you apply to Cambridge? You get all the boringness and provincial mentality of Oxford, and its in East Anglia!

Thanks. Nope didn't apply to Cam as they haven't got anyone for my field.

Thanks Soc and Athena - feel strange at the moment; not heartbroken but not happy if that makes sense. Best of luck to Soc btw; at least one of us better get in.
Sorry to hear that...best of luck with the other offers.

My condolences, as well.

If it's not a particularly awkward question to ask, what was the departmental email? I'm going to crack right now.

You're welcome. Do you have any other applications or other PhD plans? Or was that make or break?
Is anyone here still waiting to hear from the Economics dept for the Mphil program ??? .... I am just about a thread away from insanity .... sorry :eek3:

As in address or what did the email say? All the email said was "we're unable to make you an offer". Then something about the formal letter to follow. Was only 2 lines worth.

Have one other offer but that's dependent on AHRC funding. To be honest though, it was my plan b for a reason. Not quite sure what I'm going to do.

Email address is: [email protected]

Sorry, I actually meant the email address, but once you mentioned it, I was wondering about the email itself.

That's rough. The brusquer the rejection, the worse you feel for having dared apply in the first place. So far, I think KCL had the nastiest bit, and GWU was actually quite polite, even if it was denying me entrance.

Anyways, just sent it out...and now the REAL waiting game continues.

Yeap that's the way to do it. Drink a pot of tea!
This waiting game is killing me. I emailed the dept. on Friday, and haven't heard from them yet, even though they always replied to me within a business day in the past. When I called them, I was told they would be sending out emails on Fri, Sat, Sun and even Mon; to be followed by postal mail. I am in the US so the postal will take a while too...grrr.

anyone hear from development studies, qeh?

also, congratulations to all those accepted but heartfelt condolences to those that didn't get in. good luck with your future plans!
