I've been fairly relaxed up until the past two days when my other offers came through. Now Oxford is the only one I'm waiting on. I am on the edge of my seat. I've applied for the MSt English 1900-present. Will post as soon as I know so I can relieve someone else's tension. God knows, I wish someone could relieve mine!

You can call the English department and they will tell you. I believe they made their decision last week.

Hi all,

I want to ask if it is possible that I find out whether the college I like is still accepting students for my course before putting it down as my firm choice on the form? (I am applying in the 3rd Gathered Field)

Also, is Merton a popular choice among postgraduates?

I don't see why not. Phone up, explain you're picking colleges and that you don't want to waste choices on colleges if they're already full, and would they mind telling you if colleges X and Y are still accepting students? Best of luck

Thanks for replying. Btw, which are the more popular colleges and which are the less popular ones, just to give me some ideas?

Popular - any college which is central, rich and/or offers grad accommodation for 2+ years of the course. Less popular - colleges more towards the edges of town (St Hilda's, Green Templeton, LMH, St Hugh's, St Annes, Wolfson) or colleges that cater for particular groups, eg. Harris Manchester takes mature graduates.

So if I pick Ch Ch as 1st and Merton as 2nd my chances of getting into either one of them may decrease exponentially right? Since they are both rich and popular.

And do all colleges require the wearing of gowns at formal hall? Are there some colleges with few/no formal hall?

Yes, ChCh particularly seems to accept very few graduates. Merton is popular but accepts a better number of graduate students.

Most colleges will have a non-gown-wearing meal every night, if they offer formal hall (which may or not have a dress code - it might require gowns, or that you dress smartly, or a mixture...). Wadham and Balliol never have formal hall (and pretty much never ask you to wear gowns); Keble has, IIRC, two formal halls a week, which need gowns but not smart clothes; I think Oriel and Lincoln have formal hall nearly every night. Where else were you thinking about? For 'safer' bets, I'd suggest Hertford, Keble or Queen's

I suppose this is a very subjective matter but as for college choice, I can only recommend New College, I think most people agreee that it has the most active MCR in Oxford, and it's fairly central, huge and beautiful. Regarding accomodation, all graduates will be living in very cool houses 5min from college next year and the people are just amazing.
Many colleges are very cool though, even some of the least central ones like St Anne's. But apart from concerns related to social life, I guess graduates should not worry too much about colleges, as long as you have somewhere to eat and sleep!

New has informal and formal hall every day, and you're normally required to wear your gown at formal, but no one will kick you out of hall if you've forgotten it

Ooh yes, the New grad accomm. on the Western sports ground = :coma: And New have the amazing summer party, which I crashed last year - free BBQ and drinks, lovely weather, inflatables, the gardens, the squeaky mound...

And there I was thinking that we (Wolfson) had the most active MCR in Oxford  I believe we might also be one of the only colleges organising events and bops during vacations.

Cheers for that! Good to know that New College is the place to be as a graduate.

Is it difficult to get en-suite/studio rooms for New College? I desperately need to have my own bathroom and shower. I heard ChCh offers a mixture of en-suite and non-ensuite rooms, and that's the reason why I'm hesitating putting it as 1st choice. What if I get unlucky? :frown:

Actually I want to be in a college that has gown-wearing formal hall. What about ChCh, Merton, and New? How often are their formal hall?

Is Oriel popular as well?

I think you may be thinking too much into this if you're applying in the third gathered field when many colleges may have filled part or all of their graduate intake. In general, college preferences in postgraduate applications seem to be far less significant than to undergraduate applications.
