I've gone for Emma and Darwin. Darwin has lots of plus points, from what I've seen!

Good luck!

Hey guys,

Could any of you please give me an overview of Lincoln College at Oxford? Do you guys think it is a nice college? What are the pros and the cons?

Lincoln seems to be a great college. I selected it as my first choice (and Univ as second) but I was offered a studentship at Trinity.
I found this link helpful in getting a candid sense of each college:

Good accomm. (if expensive) for grads at the EPA and Bear Lane; nice food for formal hall; good graduate common room atmosphere (they have competitions for who can make the best dessert, and everyone tries all the efforts and then votes for the winner!). Biggest con is probably that food and accommodation are a bit pricey.

Thanks for the summary, sounds like a nice college to me.
Also, thanks to you fleur1 as well for the link. I have one more question guys if you don't mind: how likely it is generally that you will be accepted to one of your 2 chosen colleges? Is it usually the case that you get one of them or is it completely random?

As far as I know, the majority of people don't tend to end up at one of their preferred colleges, but it varies depending on which colleges you put down on your application form. Some are vastly more popular than others (usually the rich, old, central ones), and they also tend to be mixed colleges which have relatively few places for postgraduates, so if you apply to one of those, there's quite a lot of luck involved. Especially if you consider that there may be current undergraduates wishing to stay on for an MSt (it's uncommon for people who list their undergraduate college as a preference to be pooled elsewhere), in which case it's possible that your chosen college never actually had any places left for your course to begin with.
On the other hand, though, if you apply to one of the colleges which are less oversubscribed (i.e. larger graduate colleges, less central colleges and newer colleges), your chances of actually ending up at your chosen college are quite high. So it depends, really.

Since we are discussing colleges, could Athna et al. provide their opinions on Magdalen and Jesus. I know both are mixed but if given a choice, which would you recommend to postgrads.

Any news from the Department of Politics? I emailed the Politics Graduate Secretary to check my status (DPhil in Politics), but I got no answer...

have they replied you? I am applying to the same programme and have sent them an email as well (I am not in the country at the moment so I can only receive emails). No response yet...

Magdalen - the person to send a PM to be would be Elles, she knows a lot about the postgrad experience there. I think the accommodation is good and central, and the MCR does lots of nice drinks things. Accomm. and food are both on the costly side, but then you are paying to live in a stately home with deer park and great conference facilities (should you ever want to organise a seminar, Magdalen auditorium is bookable by students and rather wonderful for the purpose).

Jesus - you'd live out at the Bartlemas extension block, waaaaaay out in Cowley - probably two miles from the centre of town/Jesus itself. The flats are, however, nicely laid out, good value, and on a main bus route into town, and it'd only take you 15 mins into town on a bike. Jesus food is reasonably priced and nice, and Jesus students get lots of subsidies, like free swim and gym membership, sports subsidies if you play for a university side. The GCR room itself is nicely appointed and recently redone, I believe.

I'm now slightly scared by how much time I spend in other people's colleges :s-smilie:

Not yet. I am not in the country, either (I reached the conclusion that my parents are hiding the letter, because tomorrow I have an interview at another university and I am a little bit nervous...). Anyway, who did you email? I tried with Mr. Melling and it didn't work.

Actually I love snail mail: my mother has just phoned to tell me that the official letter has arrived and I have been admitted!!!
(No word on college and funding yet, but I have to retake the TOEFL: I got 105/120 and they require 109/120).

Well done!!
Can I put in a vote for LMH's MCR as well? Stuff going on all the time there.

Athena - if you ever need to get into another college, just say you're visiting a friend and show them your card. It's never let me down at Trinity (or any other college, hehe).

As for the Magdalen v Jesus debate, I'd go for Jesus Coll. Less intimidating than Magdalen and the grad accommodation really isn't far from the centre by bike.

Congrats!!!

For the TOEFL, is there any score requirement for the subsections of the test(e.g. speaking)?

Hey,

Just got a reply from Mr M. - Politics Dept. saying that I am on waiting list and that my application will be reconsidered in the March application field. Do you think I still have chances? Should I try to send more things to them - like an extra recommendation or smth? Any clue when I will hear back... aaarg, prolongation of waiting makes me even more nervous....:woo:

Thank you! I will tell you when I will have the letter in my hands. Anyway, it seems that there are no specific requirements for the test subsections:
http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/international_students/index.html
If they want anything extra they will ask you.
Some people on here were successful after being held back for the next gathered field, though I'm not sure what courses they'll be on.

Officially there is no requirement for the subsections, if you have 109 you should be fine. I think they might still accept you unofficially when you get less than 109, provided the writing and reading skills are good, but this is speculation.
