Well, I have finally submitted my grad. application to Oxford.

Has anyone else applied outside of the gathered fields/got any idea of how long it takes if you do?

Hello all -

To those asking about the Clarendon, I believe offers have been going out randomly for a while. I heard my result in February via email - so I can only imagine that it varies by department.

By the way - any Development Studies students starting in October? Anybody else end up at St. Antony's?

Hi all. I have accepted my offer. I will be at Oxford in October, and I plan to sit the GREs in the fall. I can't seem to find a testing centre in Oxford; the nearest one is in London, it seems. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

Yes, if you're going to be in Oxford, the nearest GRE testing site will be London. I know because I've been looking at this for a while now since I'm planning on sitting for the GRE after I start my course in October. Good luck!

Hmm, If you are going to Oxford, why are you taking the GRE?

Congratulations on the Clarendon! Sounds like you got accepted from the first gathered field then? I think most of the applications for Clarendon for the second gathered field are being considered and people should hear within the week. (They have already decided for Medical Sciences and also given out a few for Social Sciences, but a majority of these and for Humanities are going out next week, according to their website/other posters here).

I have been accepted to the Dev. Studies program as well but I wasn't nominated for the Clarendon. I am hoping the other program I got into has nominated me, but if not, (or even if I am but don't get it) I don't really know what I am going to do.

one more time, i hate money.
probably not
no, it's slightly more nebulous than that. the difference is less to do with what happens when you're in class (when your academic experience will be identical to everyone else's) and more to do with what happens when you're trying to get through your assignments, or generally wondering about how confident people are feeling about the work they're getting through, or you're doing ir and you want to talk to someone who's a student of a particular area you happen to be researching that week, or whatever.

if you're at a college with maybe one other ir person and two other area studies people, you don't get that kind of community.

Ahh- That makes sense. Thankyou.
I got my offer a few weeks ago, but have not heard anything back hall wise? Do you know when we will know about which hall we will be in?
Hi guys, I thought I'd finally join this forum. I got a place in the History department two or so weeks ago, and heard on Thursday that I've been nominated for one of the AHRC BGP doctoral places. I'm a little confused as to whether this means I've definitely got funding, or whether there's a chance the AHRC can still reject my proposal. Any ideas?

Massive congratulations! I hate you on both accounts :p: (out of interest, did your do your BA at Oxford? And have you got a first?

The good news is that by what I've been told about AHRC BGP places, and read online (UCL's History department are pretty open with this) is that if you've been nominated for a BGP place by the university you've applied to, then it's pretty much 99% confirmed that you'll get funding. It's the university's decision rather than the AHRC. They obviously just have to confirm it.

College, not hall.
I think it takes about a month on average, but it may take longer. You'll just have to try and be patient, I'm afraid, since niggling the graduate admission office doesn't work...

I'm coming to Oxford for the MSt, then I hope to do my PhD in the US starting fall 2010.

Thanks Xara. Gah, are you sitting the subject and general tests as well? Where are you thinking of applying?

I meant college sorry. Been so tired today as only had 4 hours sleep. Fair enough. I await news of the college place. St Antony's was my first choice, so fingers crossed i get it.

I assume from this your application was unsuccessful? Sorry to hear that, and hope you have other options.

No, never studied at Oxford before. I got a first for my undergrad and a distinction for my masters though.

Thanks for the info on AHRC. I emailed my prospective supervisor at Oxford and she firstly didn't know even know there was a nomination system this year - scared me quite a lot. She's obviously hidden away in her office somewhere!

I just need the general one. I'm thinking of applying to a bunch of US universities (mostly in the south) for a PhD in curriculum and instruction

Actually, the Clarendon consideration was staged into at least two levels: first within departments (each was allocated a number of scholarships) and then the departmentally unsuccessful was considered at the divisional level.

I also want to take the general GRE coming Fall. How do you prepare? Especially the vocabulary part of it just scares me :|

Tbh, very few people know exactly what's going on with the BGP this year as it's a new system!

Yup, didn't even get in - their loss

I'm thinking of investing in some prep books. i haven't actually started studying or anything, so i wouldn't be able to give any sensible advice to people in need of study tips.

I took the GRE last year and got V:640(91%) and Q:800(94%) (I screwed up the Verbal because the 4-hr test was held after lunch and I almost fell asleep during the Verbal section...). If you are a science/engineering major, the quantitative part should be a breeze. For verbal, I just memorized (or tried to memorize) Barron's list of 3500 words.

Check this out:
