2 part question:
Does anyone know when scholarship results come out - not AHRC or Clarendon but all other university-wide and college scholarships...

Secondly, is a reply required to an unconditional offer letter? My letter says 'once you have met these conditions please inform us asap' but since I have no conditions to meet I'm assuming no communication from me is necessary at this stage, particurlarly as I have no college assigned yet. I'd rather not send unnecessary messages but wouldn't want them to think I don't want to take up the offer...
Thanks

I took the GRE last year and got V:640(91%) and Q:800(94%) (I screwed up the Verbal because the 4-hr test was held after lunch and I almost fell asleep during the Verbal section...). If you are a science/engineering major, the quantitative part should be a breeze. For verbal, I just memorized (or tried to memorize) Barron's list of 3500 words.

Check this out:

That is still a very good verbal score. i mean, it always depends on where you want to apply with it, but i would be extremely happy to get a 640 V. I'm not a science major, but I don't think that the math part will be a huge problem (with a little bit of revising, because I haven't touched a math textbook in quite a bit). I'm terrified of the verbal AND writing sections, because i think you get so little time to write out a well-thought out and argumented essay.

I've been told on thursday last week that the outcome of the BBRSC funding for pharmacology would be "very soon", whatever this means.

I rang up Graduate Admissions to ask this question. I was told that I would only need to let them know if I wanted to decline the offer. A bit of Oxford arrogance coming out there I think....

Yes, that does sound very self-assured of them... and thanks, glad to know I don't need to send them anything for now.

I heard that most universities don't really care about the writing section.

I had such a strong urge to retake the GRE because of my V score that I wrote to Harvard's Regional Studies: East Asia Department whether the score was presentable and whether I needed to retake it. They assured me that I didn't have to. So I didn't. :p:

Time management is crucial though. I didn't have enough time for the V section (due to sleepiness) and ended up randomly picking out answers for the last few questions... :frown:
I just heard about my college - I've got a place at Linacre, which was my second choice

What's your course and what's your first choice?

I'm starting to get slightly irritated by this whole college allocation thing. I've gotten my offer in December for Christ's sake, I've been rejected by my two choices and there's STILL no offer from any other college. You would think that they could be more speedy about it, considering that it's almost half a year now.

Bleh, that's really irritating. Have you tried asking the graduate office why it might be taking so long? Surely there must still be places left somewhere, so what's the problem?

There are places left (apparently), as I only put in the formal application last week (but under ad-hoc studentship rules rather than in gathered fields). I am nervous about whether I'll get a suitable college or not.

It is sounds worth trying the graduate office...good luck.
Do you think that I should contact the department to ask about my supervisor? I did not put down anyone in particular on my application form. Only got offer two weeks ago, so I don't know if it is way too early, but also would like to know who I will be working with for 3 years!

Yes - they should have at least had someone in mind when they gave you an offer! Mine was named on my offer letter.
Two questions about scholarships:

Is it possible that someone get a scholarship from X College before getting a departmental offer?

Say if one gets a scholarship from X College while the application is circulating round the colleges, does it mean that other colleges would immediately pass his/her file to X College?

I tried to, quite a while ago I might add, but they seemed very irritated that I was asking such a question (as if it really shouldn't be of interest or concern for me) and said they couldn't comment in any way on the status of my app in what concerns colleges and that i should just wait.
Thought people might want to know that the Clarendon Scholarship page now says all awards have been given out and that if you haven't been notified yet, it means you didn't get an award.

Just curious ... all those who got an award, did you first hear by snail mail or e-mail? Anyone get an award from the History Department? Anyone get an award for a taught Masters?

I received a Clarendon for the MSt in English and I heard both by email and snail mail. They sent me a letter, but also sent a photocopy of the letter via email as I believe there is a contract I need to return to them ASAP. I received the email and letter yesterday (the 6th). Good luck!!
Yeah, I noticed the Clarendon notice this morning; didn't get it :frown:. Expected of sorts, but still disappointed. I wish there were more scholarships that considered both need and merit, not just merit. oh well.

congratulations to all those that got clarendons! Enjoy Oxford.
