4) Has anyone been allocated Catz/Trinity even if it wasn't one of their choices - what course if so.

Hey there. I've been allocated to Trinity, for the MSt in English lit. I was informed of this by the English faculty, and to date have not received any correspondence from the college itself, so they probably haven't started sending out letters yet. (Or have people on here already gotten?) It seems like a very nice place indeed.
any US folks hear yet? Its a holiday, so I guess I'll have to wait til tomorrow.
bah, the suspense is killing me.
why won't they just email something?

Anyone know much about St. John's? Grad accommodations, atmosphere, etc? Just accepted their offer...Thanks!

Hey NY...how are you? Is this swine-bug getting any worse in New York?

Am afraid I know abs nothing about St John apart from the usual stuff.. very popular, very rich etc. But have you tried the search function in this forum? There are quite a few old threads discussing the college including comments by residents.

Hi! Great, thanks! And you? You will be at St. Hilda's right? NY is getting hot...might need to buy an air conditioner. The swine flu seems to be a bigger deal to CNN than it is to those of us shoulder to shoulder on the subway everyday. I think its calming down. Or people are calming down about it.

I've read a bit about St. Johns. I listed it as my first choice because I heard they would be mostly likely to have available funding, but I thought I would see if anyone here knew from experience.

Hertford, sorry.
This is my first time posting here - but I thought I would chime in.

I'm American - I was accepted from the third gathering field for an MPhil in European Politics and Society. Anyone else in my program? I think it will be only a handful of us...

I got my letter on the 13th of May and so far haven't heard anything back on housing. My top choices were Jesus and Merton - I hear they are quite popular so I doubt with my late acceptance I will get in.

Anyways - yay for all of us who made it in!

Yes CNN does seem to enjoy The Drama....things can sound pretty frightening when you're just listening the news & am glad to hear you guys are cool about it.

Am good thanks though getting a little stressed/excited/nervous about relocating to Oxford. Good luck with St John's!

I can imagine...Where are you living now? I am only excited about relocating. Oxford compared to my closet office in a giant highrise....doesnt sound too bad.

Has anyone heard from Balliol? I was accepted in the second gathering round and Balliol is my second choice college...
They'll be slow, I think - if that was the March deadline, you might here mid-June.

I am waiting to hear from Balliol too, no news as of yet. I emailed them at one stage to ask them when I could expect to hear, but no news. I was accepted in 2nd round too.

Also does anyone know why the DPhil Politics has jumped to 6,500 GBP this year, almost double what it was last year and double what most other courses still cost. When I emailed my Dep, they just said that from 2009 the fees increased and didn't answer my question why this was like this. Is very annoying, because if I don't get funding it will mean that my Univ fee and College Fee will be 8,500 GBP. That's a lot of money before I even start thinking about accommodation etc. If anyone has any idea why there was an increase, I'd be very grateful to know.

Same for Geography and Environment. I asked the Fees Clerk about the increase last year and was told they were going to increase the fee even further to £9,500 + college fees. And that is for a PhD. The fee was actually £9,500 for some weeks earlier this year but has been reduced to £6,500 eventually. I find this pretty annoying considering that for a research degree you do not get much taught courses and basically only a free library card + some sessions with the supervisor.

I thought about sending a letter to the Social Sciences Division (they need to approve the fee for each social science subject) and complain / request more information. To my knowledge there is no PhD programme in the UK being more expensive than £3,500 (plus college fees in Cam). Most PhD programmes in Europe are much cheaper or even for free which makes Oxford social science DPhils the most expensive after US unis.

You *could* phone up and ask for a progress report, ask nicely and you never know what might happen

It is really annoying. I think that I might write to the Social Sciences Division like you suggested. To me it just seems strange that one department believes that they can raise their fees so much for no particular added benefit (except for for them that is) for the extra money paid. Almost 20 grand over three years for the privilege to be there just seems to be taking the biscuit
