You can pay the application fee before your referees submit the references.

a quick question to all those who have applied:

i've completed my form for a while now, i am just waiting for my referees to submit their references.

Do i have to wait until they have submitted the references before i submit payment and application, or can i submit now, as long as my referees upload their references to the site before the deadline?

You should submit your application now. The references will be added to your application once they're submitted. In my case all my referees submitted their forms after I submitted the application.

They don't tell you if you get rejected?

They'll tell you if you've been rejected, but they won't necessarily tell you why exactly.
Still so much to do for mine :s
I applied late November, still waiting to hear! Does anybody know if I can find out the realtive numbers of applicants to the amount they actually give offers to? (English M.St.) Thank-you!

About 400 applicants for 120 places, apparently. The 1900-present strand is the most popular one, so it'll probably get more applications per place than the 650-1550 strand.

Yes - but considereing they make offers conditional on a 2.i in many subjects I cannot imagine it to be a requirement.

hey everyone, iv just started looking at the MSc in Global governance and diplomacy and its looking really really great! Does anyone know anything about this course?

Also in the application form online there are two sections for adding 'written work' like essays, does this mean that we all have to upload two essays or is it subject specific? how do i find this out?

Thanks again :smile::smile::smile:

It's subject specific. Just check the departmental website and/or the postgraduate prospectus to find out whether the course you're applying for requires written work.

Click here: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/download_materials.html

Then select "notes of guidance". Let the PDF open, scroll right down to the end, find your course and the corresponding letter (A to E) and check what's required by looking at pages 9 & 10 to see what's required for that course.

I'm predicted a 2.i from cambridge in SPS but the problem is that i got a 2.ii in my second year (a good 2.i in first year). Even though only the 3rd year counts in cam and i spent the whole of last year doing extra cir stuff as i wanted to get everything done in the years that dont count. Anyway il hopefuly be sending the application tomorrow but i dont think i'l stand that much of a chance because of that 2.ii.

Anywayyy i wanted to ask about the college options. We have two options, what happens if both those colleges cant take you, do you get pooled to another? or does it effect you coming to oxford all together?

The former. The colleges don't actually receive your application straight away. It goes to the faculty, which then decides whether to give you an offer or not. If, and only if, the faculty decides to accept you, your application is passed to your first choice college. If the college doesn't have any more places available for your course, or if for some reason or other they decide to take another applicant, your application is passed on to other colleges. I'm not entirely sure what the relevance of the second college choice is, but I think it simply means that college gets first dibs on you, provided they have a place and don't for some reason prefer to take another applicant. If the second college can't take you either, they'll find a place for you somewhere, though, because a faculty offer means you're guaranteed a college place (though not necessarily at your first or second choice).
This should all be in the prospectus, though.

thank you !

I have another question now...:o: For the referees section, do we have to give 3 referees? I only have two, and everywhere else only asks for 2.

Technically yes, but some departments may consider applications which only provide two references (I know the English department does, but if I remember correctly you'll be applying to another department, so that won't help you much). If you want to make sure, get in touch with whoever deals with graduate admissions in your prospective department.
I still haven't heard anything.

One week until their self-imposed deadline. I'm nervous.
