I still haven't heard anything.

One week until their self-imposed deadline. I'm nervous.

Your application may well be in the pile that's going to be compared with the Jan deadline applications so don't worry just yet  ( I swear I read that somewhere)

Is there a self-imposed deadline?

Yeah, according to the Ox applicant guidelines, if you apply by the November deadline, you're meant to hear by 16th Jan; if you apply by the Jan deadline, you're meant to hear by 20th March.

I doubt it's a 100% hard and fast rule though.

I see, that's good to know!
Thanks
I have applied (everything submitted for the end of October 08) to the MSc Mathematical Modelling & Sceintific Computing and a DPhil in Mathematics at Oxford (1st Choice College - Balliol, 2nd Choice College - St Johns). Anyone else applied to these courses? If so, have you had any response? What is your background?

I have also applied to the MPhil Statistical Science and CASM (Part III) at Cambridge (Gonville & Caius, St Johns) and a PhD in Statistics at Warwick. Anyone else in the same boat or heard anything etc.?

Now that I've finally heard something, I thought I'd join the thread.

I've been invited for an "informal chat" about my application with the course director. Does anyone know what that means..? Since it doesn't say interview I have no idea what to expect. It sounds as if it wouldn't be competency based, right?

Well I've had a rejection today for the Masters in Financial Economics course. The interview didn't go so great, but I thought I had a strong application :frown:

Hey guys, got an offer to do a masters course at Oxford. This may have already been dealt with, but I was wondering how long it will take to know which college you have been assigned to (in my case, if I was accepted by my first choice college). Cheers guys.
you won't hear until a college accepts you. in practice, this means that you might hear fairly soon (within a month, say) if your first choice college wants to take you, or it might take ages (a few months) if you get passed around a lot.
I received an email yesterday saying I have been accepted conditional on a high 2.i in my finals

i have been subjected to the "your application is being re-evaluated and will be deferred to the next gathering field" nightmare at oxford. should i just throw in the towel? what are the odds? does anyone have any idea? i have received unconditional offers from three other schools, and i would thus hate to wait on a wing and a prayer ...

frustrated, and wishing i had read that personal statement one more time,

I don't think that anyone can really answer that but yourself, however cheesy it may sound. How much do you like the Oxford course compared to the others that you already have offers from? At this point, though, I would say definitely hang on in there because you've got nothing to lose. After all, you already put in all the effort for the personal statement and essays and stuff.

Practically all colleges will provide accommodation during your first year, so I doubt you'll have to worry about that.

Hey did anyone here have to submit essays with their application? I have to submit two, im just wondering, they specify 2000 words, does this include the bibliography and footnotes? Also does it matter if it was like 2200 or something silly like that? These are supervision essays and im not sure what to cut from them....if anything i added things to make them seem better:o:

Also im finalising my college choices, im torn between a graduate college and a mixed one. what does everyone think? I like the look of Queens, Worcester, st cross (for some reason).

I think you should try to limit your essays to 2000 words or less. I submitted one writing sample that was almost exactly 2000 words and one that was about 1500 words. I have been told that what college you are in doesn't impact the quality of your education as a postgrad. If I were you, I'd pick colleges based on their proximity to the places you will frequent most often. Also, keep in mind that almost all grad colleges guarantee college housing for first-year students--some mixed colleges don't.

You should be fine, and I doubt it includes bibliography/footnotes. But then again what do I know? I'm a mathematician... :P

I would go for a mixed undergrad/grad college, probably be more vibrant. Grads are generally fairly dull people compared to undergrads!

I'm possibly going to apply for the January gathered field (yes, last minute, I know) and if it goes through the school of Archaeology, they need essays - but all the archaeology essays I did this term (the ones that were any good, anyway...) were utterly epic - 3800 words in some cases! Cutting them is just going to make them look a bit stupid, I fear...

I edited a 4000 word essay of mine into a 2000 word. The art is to make sure the key argument is there while get rid of the peripheries.

Good luck with the application!
