I was just looking at mobile deals at Oxford and the best I could find was O2's offer...for 10 quid a month they gave u a pretty sweet set with a qwert keypad and 100 texts and minues free. I thought it was a good deal and will probably get it when I return there next month. If anyone has any other sweet deals they know of for comparable prices, please do share.

PS- there are even better deals (and sets) for 15 to 25 quid a month, if you are willing to pay extra...

As regards Macs, I had a PC when I was there but my closest friend at LMH has a mac and it seemed to work fine. I would suggest emailing your college IT rep to be safe.

Finally... I'll be at Wolfson! :yep: Anyone else?

I'm trying to figure out what to do with my mobile phone. I've been told that many companies give you a device when you sign a contract. Any advice on best tariffs?

Also, I'm changing my laptop... I really LOVE the macbook pro but I'm wondering if mac is compatible with College and University IT services.

I think we get access to that sometime in middle or late Sept. Can't remember where I saw it though...

I was under the impression that we only got it in October when we get there, actually. That's when we get the University card as well. I could be wrong...

Maybe I am thinking of "access" to the Oxford system (whatever that means). I remember hearing that we can login sometime in Sept. You could be right about the emails when we get there ....

Is there any luggage delivery service at Heathrow (to Oxford)? My luggage is too heavy...
Just bring only what you need! You will probably buy more clothes when you're in Oxford, and unlike undergrads, you won't be thrown out at the end of each term, so it's not like you'll be moving really often. At the end of the year, sell what you no longer want/need to keep.

If there is it's likely to be hideously expensive and you'd probably be better off mailing your stuff to Oxford.

Mailing too is insanely expensive. From the USA it costs about 150$ for about 30 pounds. And that's slow mail...

I echo the "only bring what you can carry" method and am trying to clear out my closests now so that I am not tempted to bring useless things to Oxford.

It's actually incredibly easy to take your luggage from heathrow to oxford. you will find trolleys for free from the baggage area to "The Airline" bus (with free wi-fi; 20 pound for a single, 25 for a period return--it's station 14A at the Central Bus Station at Heathrow). The bus will take your luggage, obviously, from there. Then, there's a taxi stand next to the bus station at Oxford, so you just move your stuff from one vehicle to another. This way is incredibly cheap (no extra charge really) and you will have the luggage in your possession at all times.

At the end of the year, all the JYA students got together and had a 'yard sale' on one of the quads, sold clothes/bikes/printers etc to the continuing students - you could get together with other internationals at the end of your time and have an MCR sale like that of anything you buy

Ouch.:s-smilie:
Well, in that case it's not an option, of course. chochu is right, though: obviously it's not convenient having to drag several suitcases down to the bus stop at Heathrow, but there are lifts and trolleys and it's a relatively short distance, and there are always taxis near Gloucester Green.

Yeah - the mail is not exactly the way to go on getting stuff to the UK.

I know there are going to be trolleys and such - but I also recommend to those coming from abroad - to travel with a hiking backpack. You can load quite a bit in it, and it can then be on your back, leaving your hands free to take one suitcase. Trust me - traveling through a crowded airport trying to lug two heavy suitcases is damn near impossible without making an ass of yourself or killing others in the process.

Ps - speaking of packing - what are some essential things that we people in England would suggest we need to bring to have them right away? Or what is insanely expensive in England that it would be cheaper for us to pack? I know on one of the St Cross boards it said that girls should think about bringing along some nice dresses for balls as they are pricey in the UK.

If you have the basics of sub fusc already (white shirt, black skirt/trousers if you're a girl - dark suit and white shirt for guys), for matriculation, bring those (white shirts in a sizes 8-12 suddenly become very difficult to come by in 0th week, what with matriculation and 'school uniform' bops). If you went to a school with a uniform, bring your tie/other distinguishing features - I know the concept of school uniform, and wearing it to a party, completely bemused the European students in my year. Erm... you can pick up a decent printer for £30 if you need one (or pay for the college printer). And a decent winter coat - if you have one of those, no matter how much space it takes up, BRING IT. Ditto scarves, hats and gloves - by December, Oxford is going to be really cold. I got myself some winter cycling gloves when I was in Canada (I'm hoping a country that has winter temps of -30C will produce better winter gloves...) because I often lose the feeling in my finger tips if I have to cycle for more than ten mins to get somewhere in late November - February. I also have a large collection of shawls, scarves and hats, because my nose and ears seem to take the brunt of the cold wind, so things you can wrap right round your face/head are great (my personal favourite is my Buff).

Can you guess that I feel the cold? :o:

OH my word - that Buff is awesome. I watched the video at http://www.buffwear.co.uk/pages/product-info/ways-to-wear.php and about laughed my head off. But now I kind of want! :p: (edited to add: OMG - they make them for riders - http://www.buffwear.co.uk/pages/product-info/ways-to-wear.php - where has this been my entire competition career!!!!??? It's the handiest thing ever if it can keep your hair out of the way after you take off your helmet.)

And cold weather shouldn't be too bad for me (I lived in the Cascade Mt Range in the USA where we get an average of 4 feet of snow and sub zero temps) - oh and I have lived in Seattle (rain central) --- but for others - if you get cold and wet I recommend a wind/rain blocking jacket - Helly Hansen and The North Face both make pretty good products for this.

I'm not sure how I'd cope if I lived somewhere properly cold, like the Cascades or Calgary (-1C on the 1st July!!). Cambridge will be plenty cold enough for my tastes, compared to the Midlands (further north, and yet oddly warmer than Cam or Ox...)
I just got a mail that I will be accomodated at the EPA site (Lincoln College), does someone has any information what the rooms are like there?
