I did a post in the Oxford freshers thread about dresses which I'll dig out at some point. Re. handbags at matriculation - you can't have them, I don't think. Put your keys etc inside your mortar board and carry that.

International induction will be on 30 Sept. I received an email from their office.

Thanks for letting me know...I vaguely remember something about it but I must not have really thought about it as I only get there on the 1st.
Yeah, Athena got there first - you get a handbag as part of sub fusc. It's called your mortarboard.

Hi,

Do you receive any kind of confirmation from the university when you send your contrat? I sent mine 2 months ago and I am asking myself whether they've received it as I am still waiting for my ID/pwd for self-registrartion...

Thanks

I'm a nice German ! But then again - I am a German who has lived in the states for most of her life. I've learned the friendly USA ways... :p:

I'm German myself. I was talking about hypothetical nice German admin staff there, though.

:p: hahaha.

So then in addition - is it more normal for girls to wear the mortarboards or the soft caps?

Aren't student supposed to wear mortar board?? :hmmmm2:
You're technically not allowed to wear it until you actually graduate. Until then you just carry it.
Mortarboards are more common, but some people do wear the soft caps. Once you've got all the excess starch out of them, and if you wear them on the back of your head rather than on the top, they look much less stupid.

Really?! Our Dean specifically said that that was a myth, and that we had to wear them to Matriculation when walking through the streets and back, and that they should technically be at least carried everywhere if in Sub Fusc. Otherwise there would've been no doffage, and that's basically what made Matriculation fun. Well, that, and drinking games relating to doffage.
Isn't it only blokes who do the doffing?

Can someone explain "doffing" to the Yank on TSR ?

Is the term "doffing" derived from the practice of doffing (tipping) one's hat in greeting/respect by any chance?
I'm not a Yank, fools. And yes, post #1950, it is. threedaystar - I only meant it literally. I wasn't talking about drinking games, whereas you clearly are

Actually - whoops... what I wrote came out wrong. Wasn't insinuating you were the Yank, but me. I had no idea what doffing was, so was asking for people to explain it. Clearly I cannot type this morning and make sense.
Ahhhh right. Doffing can mean the tipping of a hat (which generally only the blokes do), as mentioned - or, as others implied, it can also be some kind of drinking game. Sorry for misunderstanding you

Haha, yes! Well done for finding it!

You'd be OK in most of those dresses in winter provided you'd be largely inside, with flesh-tone tights and a pashmina/shawl. Copious amounts of alcohol are also useful for overcoming the cold...
Hi everyone.
I was accepted to read for an MPhil in International Relations at Merton College, Oxford.

As some of you know, Merton administers two scholarship that pay university/college fees and provide a healthy annual stipend of 10,000 pounds for four years (covering both MPhil and DPhil). The deadline for applications was Friday 28 of August.

I applied. I wanted to ask if anyone here has applied, as I have obtained some interesting information from Merton and also it would be enlightening to chat about each other's application.

Ah, the scholarship is the "Domus B graduate scholarship"

Thanks everyone and good luck!
Random question about things to bring:

We have to bring our own bed linens - does anyone happen to know if they have the same deal as US colleges, having XL-twin beds? Do we need to bring XL-twin bed sheets or regular or is there a chance some people might have full or queen beds?
