Help- Sussex Leeds or Liverpool uni

I can't make up my mind what uni I wanna go to and I think this is probably due to the fact that there were no open days this year so I have 0 clue as to what the 'vibes' of the unis are... Could any one tell me what types of people go to these unis/ what the social life is like/ what the campus actually is like (grotty/nice,etc)/ what is the music scene like in the local town (I'm a musician so would like to have a gd music scene+ be able to socialise with fellow musicians) and how the university treats its students? thankkk youuuu

Which instrument(s) do you play?

Are you going to be studying Music as your main subject?

I wonder whether Liverpool might be a good match for you.

All the Universities you have listed are great places, but I still think that Liverpool would be a good choice for you personally.

I didn't go there myself as a student but I did spend a few days doing research in the archives of the University of Liverpool just off Abercromby Square and I really liked it there.

I go to Leeds (final year) and am also a musician.

We have a LOT of music based societies varying from orchestras to jazz bands to acapella to societies designed to help you form a band. Liverpool is also a good choice for music scene, but we did used to have Live at Leeds which is a big part of the Leeds uni culture. I know a lot of people who love music who are very glad they chose Leeds.

The social life in Leeds is notoriously very very good and the campus is beautiful and one of the biggest single-site campuses in the country. I am sure you can find tours on youtube (for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyv_eT8e750) and maybe come and visit if you aren't far away.

Basically I would highly recommend Leeds, especially for someone who is into music. I've had a great time. I also see you may take philosophy modules; I did too and the lecturers and modules on offer are great.

Feel free to message me if you want.

Well if it helps also, I’m from Brighton where Sussex is based. Brighton obviously has a very good music scene but the university is way behind Liverpool, and even further behind Leeds. Nice campus though, and amazing city. If it’s a great course then disregard the rankings, go where makes you happy! But I think purely uni wise, Sussex is less good than the others. City wise though, it’s my favourite (but I did live there for many years). Good choice for if you’re in to music but not a million miles better than the others.

Hiya, yeah Sussex is obviously not ranked as high as Liverpool and Leeds on the league tables but the course is more relevant for what I want to do and also if you look at the league tables for English, Leeds is ranked 21 and Sussex is ranked 22 which makes it sooo much more difficult to choose because it makes the differences between the two so much more slight haha

Oh yeah absolutely, it’s hard to choose! Rankings don’t overly matter anyway, just go where makes you happy. Part of why people prefer Russell groups is because they have more funding so often better equipment, resources, unions etc but even then idk if you’d even notice the difference.

I’d be interested to know what you decide! Drop me a message if you have any questions.

Yeah thats true- I heard some universities actually pay to be Russell group unis and thats why, for example, Bath and st Andrews arent russell group unis but theyre ranked higher than ones that are like Liverpool and Leeds so idk

I'll try and have a think- i'm so bad at decisions anyways but thanks for your help!
