Help maths

A salesman gets a basic wage of £160 per week plus a commision of 30%
of the sales he makes that week.
In one week his total wage was £640
Work out the value of the sales he made that week.
Think about what calculation you would need to make to get to 640 if you knew the sales he made and work backwards from that.

Start by letting the sales = x and form an equation using the information given

Think about what calculation you would need to make to get to 640 if you knew the sales he made and work backwards from that:

640 = 160 + (sales x 0.3)
480 = sales x 0.3
1600 = sales

Therefore he makes £1600 in sales

why do you make it 0.3

Commission is the amount the salesman gets paid for his service of selling the 'product'. Let's say he sold houses, he doesn't own the houses (they're provided by the company he works for) but gets paid to sell them so when he sells a house, he doesn't get paid the price of the house but a portion of it as the rest would go to the company that originally owned the house.

In this case, he gets 30% of the total amount people payed to buy the 'products' he has sold. To find the 30% of a value, you divide by 100 and multiply by the percentage (in this case 30) which is the same as multiplying by 0.3

We are not allowed to give answers but there are websites that give math helps. One that I paticularly like is www.omath.org its only for IGCSE or GCSE maths but you can ask questions and also access pastpapers.
Hope it helps.
Good Luck
