Working at McDonalds

My friend works at Mcdonalds and is getting very depressed by the way they are trying her.

She was working yesterday and was sceduled from 4pm until 2am for a close. The manager who was working that night kept her until 3:30am making her clean up etc By what my friend has told me the manager seemed to be nit picking at almost everything.

My friend ended up in a debate with the manager, as the manager sat upstairs all night doing nothing while four people, including one other manager, had to clean the store. She would only come down every hour or so to tell them what they had done wrong, then go back upstairs and sit in the office. She told manager that she didn't have to stay any longer than 15 minutes past her sceduled shift times and the manager laughed at her telling her "in 23 stores I've worked in I've never seen that happen". Even though my friend was told that it is a Mcdonalds policy if not it's the law, that you are not required to stay any longer than 15 minute past your sceduled time. Is this correct? She was also told "if you show me that, I'll show you my ass" Which I don't think is right.

My friend was upset at fact the manager just stayed upstairs all night and only came down to complain that during the debate she asked the manager to show how she'd like it do be done rather than just complain, she was told "I'm not paid to do that". When my friend told her that she wasn't she was answered with "yes you are it's in your contract". My friend has not even seen her employment contract. She has been working there for the last 5 months.

Another thing is that my friend had booked a day of for today to do driving lessons and they were accepted, yet for some reason McDonalds sceduled her in. My friend is doing lessons but is finding it hard to get them, due to her instructor always being pre-booked, yet she can't get lessons as even though she requests time off for lessons they aren't accepted until McDonalds is good and ready to do the weeks scedule, which can sometimes be the week before, therefore her instructor is fully booked up. So today she stayed off even though she was mean't to "be in" and was bombarded with phones calls, she didn't answer phone as she was worried incase they'd moan at her that much she'd give in and go into work. When she goes into work tomorrow she knows she will be pulled to one side and shouted at alot.

There are also another few issues:

When she first started she was put on her break almost everytime straight away, which is illegal.

Yesterday she was working from 4pm until supposedly 2am. Yer she was only give oen 45minute break from 5pm until 5:45pm. If she tries to ask for more or complain that she needs a break she is told "we've all been working 9 hours without a break, your not the only one."

She is constantly kept behind longer than her sceduled shift: if she is mean't to get off at 6pm she won't get off until gone 6:20pm

She has to ask can she go the toilet and can be refused. Is this allowed? I'm not sure but surely it's a human requirement.

Sorry for the huge rant but I need some advise on how I can help her.

ermm... I worked at Mcdonalds a few years ago for a couple months and let me tell you, they never treated me that badly at all. In fact they were the most flexible bosses (I've also worked at Hilton Hotels... opposite ends of the spectrums and trust me, I'd rather work at McD's)

(assume I am speaking to your friend hereafter)
Your manager is deliberately breaking the rules and you should write a letter of complaint. 23 restaurants? Clearly that shows that she's been moved from store to store because she's hard to work with. That means that she is the problem, not you.

Here are some generic facts I remembered from having been an employee back when I was 16: McD policy is along as all customers are being served and there is at least one member ofthe crew at a till, you are free to use the toilet. Breaks cannot be taken in the first or last hour of a shift. You may be required to work 15-30 min after your shift ends but no longer without prior notice. Legally, a break should be taken every 5 hours, and McD gives a meal with each shift.

If the problem continues after she has lodged a formal complaint (which she must because her manager's out of order) then I say just leave. quit. She'll have a couple months experience and Cruella'll have to give a reference in future. McD is known for being a doss job for students. If it is stressing her out it is really not worth her time or effort.

Must be a McDonalds policy, there is no way it could be the law.
she works at mcdonalds? what does she expect? shes not gunna be given any special treatment. if she doesn't like it she should just leave and get another job.

From my old handbook which they gave to me on induction and from memory. Your friend should have been given one. But it really isn't unusual to stay more than an hour later on short notice as long as it's reasonable (3am isn't reasonable but 6-7pm is), we've all done it.

This thread makes me hungry. Have I missed McBreakfast time?
haha, she should get her boss to show her her ass and then do her for sexual harrasment.
I worked there for over 2 years, they tried that **** all the time.

One thing people don't understand is that working at McDonalds is sort of liberating, in the same way that being homeless is. In the words of Tyler Durden, "It's only when we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." When the worst someone can threaten you with is you not being able to work at McDonalds anymore, it really makes your job a lot easier. **** everyone else who works there, if they don't know this yet then they'll suffer at your expense. Just go there and don't care about working. Just do the minimum, leave on the dot your shift ends + 15 mins. If they tell you to stay, tell em to sod off. Again, the worst they can do is sack you (and even that's dubious, given the mcds policy) which really isn't a huge threat.

Basically, this.

That's why I enjoyed working there. I quit about 3 times and then they would call me the next week and beg me to come back. Easy money. Good Tyler quote btw.
My friend has just rung me sayng that she went in for her shift today and was berely able to clock on and wash her hands before being asked "where have you been". When she tried to explain that she had a holiday booked off she was told she was unble to work that day and had to go home, on store managers request.

When she asked where the store manager was, she was told that the store manager was on and to go call up tomorrow. They also asked her what shift she was in, when she told them she was in at 6am, she was told to go in and then the store manager would see her about if she could work.

My friend is very upset as she has doen nothing wrong but is getting treated as if she "no showed". Also she has to get up tomorrow morning at 4:30am to be in work at 6am, the only way she will be able to get to work safely is by taxi which is going to cost her a full hours work, Even then she doesn't know if she will be able to work.

Any advise?

Totally true, my friend being sent home today has put more pressure on the rest of the crew.

IS the 15minutes allowed? I've asked this before but no-one seems to know. Is it a McD's policy?

I've told my friend to look for a new job, but she says that she needs the money and getting another job will be hard due to all students wanting part time work and then xmas is coming up.
According to the crew handbook, they're not allowed to keep her for more than 20 minutes after her scheduled shift time. I would recommend going and speaking to the business manager about the problems with this other manager.

Is she working full or part time? She should ask the scheduling manager to guarantee her at least one day off (the same day) every week so she can have a fixed driving lesson.

According to the crew handbook, you shouldn't be asked to go on your break in the first hour of your shift. So 5-5:45 is perfectly reasonable if starting at 4, however I think if you're on a 10 hour shift you're entitled to a second 15 minute break. I'm not entirely sure about that though - I've never worked closes.

McD's is really bad with scheduling. I wrote that I could work MAX of 12 hours a week, but they booked me for ~22. So I talked to the manager (more than once, might I add) and he said "okay, okay, I'll fix that". The next week, I was booked for 20+ hours again, and also the week after that. I called them up and they moaned about being short of people or something. I quit a few weeks after.

That's quite normal. What she needs to learn to do is how to drop everything and run out the door when it's time to get off. By the second week of working, I was staying 5-10 minutes behind, sometimes to say bye or to work for a while longer if the store was busy. She is not obligated in any way to do this though.

She needs to ask? Just go. Not like they can stop you or anything.

Where in the handbook does it say this?

She will be talking to the store manager tomorrow and will be mentioning a few things about a few managers:
1) How the scedule manager ignored her, when she'd tried to explain how her requests where accepted yet muggled up.
2) How while trying to talk to scedule manager, other managers irrupted:
a)Male manager offered a chewy as she smelt of smoke
b) Store manager made a dig at her, asking the rhetorical question of "you not feeling sick this week" all because my friend was ill the week before due to overworking, she literally couldn't get out of bed to have food nevermind go work.
c) Straight away the male manager irrupted yet again and said "it's because she's pregnant and doesn't know who the father is". Another manager told him that he shouldn't say that.
All this went over my friends head as she was too concerned in getting her requests sorted.

I've told her not to go in tomorrow due to it looking like it will be for nothing, but once again she says she needs the money :frown:
It is a human right to be allowed to go to the toilet, they aren't allowed to say no.
you sure know a hell of a lot about your "friend" job

You need to tell your friend to get a transfer. I work at McDonalds and I wouldn't put up with **** like that.

Our managers look after our staff and aslong as we work hard and not slack, they're leniant. We're allowed to go the toilet, have drink breaks. They don't mind us chatting as long as the job is done and it isnt in front of customers.

Anyway I set a new record yesterday, 13 hour shift lmao. 1pm in the afternoon till 2am
