Beginners' German

Hello, i'm wanting to apply for beginners German at uni and I was wondering what things i should do/have on my personal statement to show interest (with Oxbridge in mind). Any advice, tips etc would be greatly appreciated.

what made you want to do German? is it their culture, way of living, technological capabilities etc
also see if your college etc have any beginners German classes, try and get a headstart with basic grammar if you can
