How to get into investment banking if I got bad A levels?

Hello,
My exams didn't go well last months. I simply ****ed up and I think my teachers will award me with BBC-BCC. Those grades aren't enough for me to meet my entry requirements for my course which is AAB and ABB.

This leaves me with 2 options:

1) Clearing into non-target university with my current grades.

The main benefit of this pathway is that I don't have to waste a year of my life at home. However, there is one huge disadvantage which is sticking foot in a bank’s door. From my research I found that its extremely difficult nearly impossible to land an internship if you're not graduating from target/semi- target university. The reason being that IB recruit from certain universities which already have high filtering so they don't have to do it again during their recruitment process which saves them time and money. Statistically in 2017 49% of Analysts in GS,JPM and MS graduated from target universities (LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial, Warwick, UCL), 18,6% came from semi-targets (Durham, Nottingham, Loughborough, Bristol and etc) and only 1.3% are from non-target universities (the rest is international universities [31%]). Idk how is it different now in post covid world but I don't think it has changed much.

2) Retaking A levels in October.
Retaking A levels will give me a change of getting into Target/semi-target university. Universities accept retakes so there shouldn’t be an issue. Retakes this year will be taking place in October and the result supposed to be given by December. However, idk the attitude of recruiters in IB towards A level retakers. There isn’t much information about it but some forums suggest that there shouldn’t be an issue unless they deliberately ask for it during application process. On the other hand retaking A level means you have to stay at home which can be quite frustrating/demotivating factor.

Thank you for taking time to read this. And I would like to hear your thoughts in a comments.
If you know any retakers, please connect them with me I want to ask them some questions about their experience.

1) MS, GS and JPM are the top 3 bulge brackets and there are other investment banks (which pay the same) to look at. BAML, barclays, citi, CS etc they will each have varying levels of how much they recruit from each university (and indeed what the consider to be a target as some semi-targets are targetted by them). EBs tend to be more selective for targets i hear.

2) You don't know how your exams went, everyone else could have struggled and they are legally not allowed to be the only piece of evidence your teachers use. Having a back up is a good plan but don't freak out just yet. If you do fall short you might be able to get into a semi-target for a weaker course that's less competitive. Personally, I'd resit since the investment banks won't actually care beyond spring week applications and it lets you get into a target/semi-target which is far more important. Also I'm unsure if doing the actual exams counts as re-sitting.
I didn't read the entirety of your post but retake. You're not getting into banking with those grades. It's just not happening.

Unless you manage to get into a target/top semi-target masters of finance after uni. Which will cost you an additional ~£30k, some of which will be out of pocket. If you go to a target it'll be more, a semi will be less but you also are unlikely to get into banking immediately (you'd probably have to go through Big 4, which won't get you into MS/GS/JPM if that's what you're after).

Hi I know this was 3 years ago but I’m in a really similar predicament.

I had some extenuating circumstances at the start of my exams and I underperformed heavily. I was predicted A*A*A which all of my teachers were confident I’d get but I ended up with BBC.

I was able to get onto a fantastic semi target course that’s pretty well known for IB placements as they dropped the clearing requirements loads and I was the first person to call.

I have some other well known maths competitions under my belt all with high scores.

Any advice? (Please don’t give the toxic WSO advice)

I’m in a similar predicament (got ABC and got into a semi-target) I’m going to completely forget about spring weeks and internships in first year because with my grades it’s practically impossible to get them tbh . Im going to focus on improving my CV e.g. (learn a coding language (python) and do virtual work exp. Which some IBs offer). I’m going to resit the subject I got a C in aiming for A-A* in 2025 . In our sort of predicament strategy is the most important thing above all IMO.

After doing some research I found out some stuff.

If we’re resitting, we can put our predicted grades on our CV. Also there are no longer a level requirements for the large majority of BB investment banks. It’s more about having a referee and performing well on interview.

Although tedious, there probably no harm in applying to internships. My particular course is 3 years so i don’t actually have much of a choice if I want to land my job without a masters (which I’d be open to).

If you’re on a 4 year, you’ve probably got the best course of action there.

I’m doing a 3 year course too , you don’t think it’s possible to get an internship in year 2 if you miss out on internships in year 1 ? Also thanks for the information on grades I wish you all the best.

If you do a masters (or plan to do one) you can still submit for springs I believe.

However summer internships applications are open all the time for all years apart from last. Also off cycle internships occur so you could in fact wait for the grades. However by that point your year 1 grades will hold so much more bearing (a levels become an obsolete measure of academics which isn’t really a strong data point anymore).

We’ll be fine. I did an AS in FM and scored and A alongside some other competitions so if you have ways of showing your ability academically you’ll be fine.

I think I was getting stressed for no reason good luck. We’re gonna make it.
