Can someone explain the grading system at uni for me?

Is a 2:1 the highest?
no, a first (1:1) is the highest and is normally 70%.

Understanding grades at university -

First-Class Honours (First or 1st) (70% and above)

Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1, 2. i) (60-70%)

Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2, 2. ii) (50-60%)

Third-Class Honours (Third or 3rd) (40-50%)

A first class degree is not a "one-one".

The second digit in "2:1" and "2:2" refers to the division within a second-class degree -- "second-class, division 1" and "second-class, division 2". The first class and third class are not divided. So there's no such thing as getting a "1:1" or a "3:1" etc.
