The Student Room Group

I need some advice for medicine. :)

Hello, I would like to ask for advice on my application to Medicine in Scotland.

I have; 6 A's at National 5 and Higher Maths A, Higher English A, Higher Human Biology A, Higher Music A and Higher Chemistry A. (those grades are my predicted highers btw)

Next year I have chosen; Advanced Higher Chemistry, Advanced Higher Biology and Higher Psychology.

I am thinking of applying to Medicine at Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and St Andrews. I have taken part in the REACH Programme and have achieved an A in that too. (Hopefully that gives me a better chance).

I'm just looking for any general tips/advice for my application.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi @poppy67!

I reached out to Sarah, our Admissions and Records Manager for Medicine, about your post. She's been in touch to say:

'We are soon going to be updating our widening access policy for 2022 entry, so you might want to keep an eye on our website over the summer - https://www.abdn.ac.uk/smmsn/undergraduate/medicine/widening-access.php

Academically, you sound like you are on the right track, and this summer you want to put as much preparation and practice as you can into UCAT before you sit the test. I am sure your Reach Officer will be helping you with this, but it really is key!

We know its really difficult to get work experience just now, but there are lots of virtual work experiences available out there, and the Medical Schools Council have prepared a lot of really useful information to help think of other ways to get experience too. https://www.medschools.ac.uk/studying-medicine/making-an-application/work-experience Their website is really resourceful with lots and lots of useful advice for all stages of the application process.

We had an open day at the weekend (we will have another on in August), but you can watch the videos and find out a bit more about Aberdeen and our admissions processes here - https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/undergraduate-open-day/medicine-virtual-open-day/ '

Good luck with your application! :flower2:

hello, i had a quick wee question about the application process and was hoping someone would clear somethings up.

i just finished my sixth year of high school and I'm applying to study medicine this October. I got 6As in my Nat 5s, 3As and 2Bs at highers but i didn't do so well in my advanced highers this year, due to circumstances at home i wasn't able to give them my all.

i am a full time young carer (which is why i meet the widening access criteria). so my question is (taken i do well in the ucat), will i still be able to obtain an interview? i.e. do they take advanced higher grades into consideration before interviews take place.
i checked on the website but they haven't mentioned anything about advanced highers. hopefully someone can help me out .
many thanks. xx
