My e-student membership has lapsed (graduating this year) and I'm looking at the membership prices for licentiates. Considering it is a bit pricey, I was wondering if its necessary for a BMS in a lab to have this membership?

It's not, but it is if you want to become a Specialist Biomedical Scientist since it is an IBMS qualification.

Yes. You have to have held IBMS membership for 2 years in order to be put in for verification for the Specialist.

so while you're here, may I ask how a Band 5 can progress to Band 6? I've heard that there are different ways such as completing an MSc course, the specialist portfolio, etc? I am a bit confused on how the process actually works.

To progress to Band 6 you need to complete the specialist portfolio, a masters is not required

Some laboratories will actually allow you to take a Band 6 position if you have an MSc, but they're few and far between. I know there are a few Biomedical Scientist's within the UK that actually have a research PhD and no Specialist Diploma and have been given Band 6 positions too.

But yes, Specialist is the nailed on way to get it. People that get it via other routes are usually incidental.

Oh okay. I agree that it probably depends on location/hospital because I know a few people who have progressed to band 6 without having completed the portfolio. Thank you!

There is no set framework for progression to Band 6 without the IBMS Specialist Diploma, so to hope for it would be silly and risky, and progression beyond Band 6 without it would be likely not possible, considering reaching 6 without it is unlikely itself.
