Do you need to have Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat at uni to socialize with people or can you still make friends without them. Also which social media platform do you think is the most necessary one to have at uni.

Quite right. You can just talk to people face to face.

Hi! Ronaldinhoe

I wouldn't say you NEED social media to socialise at uni.

However, if you were to join a society (usually the best way to meet new people) they will post important dates and stuff on their Facebook page. Also, a lot of courses have Facebook pages where they post important information and things like work opportunities and study support. Instagram is also used a lot too to communicate with students, especially the official university pages.
Even if you don't like social media, getting them and then just using them for uni would be beneficial, as you do have the choice to ignore them.

I hope this helps!

I'd say yes. Talking face to face is good but I doubt it'll last long when those deadlines start getting nearer. Plus, there's a lot of online groups that share info about a lot of things, upcoming events, making new friends online etc.

Hello Ronaldinhoe,

Hope you're doing okay

I don't think anybody needs to have social media, but it's definitely helpful for staying in touch with people you meet face-to-face at university.

If I was going to recommend one, I'd say Facebook! I didn't have an account on there before I started at Salford, but I quickly found that it's the platform most areas of the university use and now I'm in groups for my accommodation, my course, my societies etc.

Like I said, you could survive without social media at university, but I'd at least think about it before you arrive because there might even be applicant groups for you to join already

Good luck,

I knew some people at uni who started FB accounts just for keeping up with uni friends/clubs/etc and then just deleted their profile after graduation. So that's always an option.

Hi, I hope all is well.

Social media is not a necessity at university, so if you don’t want it, don’t worry.

However, I would just say having a group chat with people in the same course as you is extremely helpful, especially if you’re finding something difficult.

Hope this helps.

No, I'm off social media and my grades shot up. It's not necessarily but it might be useful to be in groups to do with your subject on Facebook for example, to get more help or advice.

It's not essential but I'd recommend having social media still as it makes it easier to communicate with people. Facebook and Instagram are probably the most common ones.

So do you still use Facebook for study groups? I don't want to get social media but also don't want to be a pain for others e.g. when doing group work

I don't use any of it, deleted my accounts because it was too distracting for me. If you can balance your time between studies and use it, that's fine. It gave me too much anxiety and quite frankly, everything I scrolled through was so negative and detrimental to my mental health but you can also control what you post.

So how do you contact course mates and how do you know about any events societies are organising?

Through whatsapp... I stupidly made posts I regret online when I was younger and got cancelled, that's also why I'm off it.

Hi Ronaldinhoe,

I am a student at Bournemouth University and I have found social media very useful to communicate with people. For example, a lot of people used Facebook or Instagram to find their flatmates before joining so you can work out who is bringing what and get to know them a bit. Group chats are also used a lot when doing group work, a lot of societies use facebook pages to communicate to everyone, and social media can be a nice way to keep up to date with what your friends are up to and you may find it is how you will get invited to most things. However, it is definitely not a necessity if you don't want to get it. There are other methods of communication such as Whatsapp or iMessage if you have an iphone so don't feel you have to get it.

Hope this helps, Tia
