I've been put into a group with others ill be living with and so far all of them I try to talk to and become friendly with are very dry, rude and will leave me on read, probably come off as paranoid but is this how uni flatmates are?

Everyone is likely to be nervous/hesitant at this stage. It might just be because you haven’t met each other in person yet so its harder to gel. I’d suggest selecting some board games / deck of cards to take with you as an ice breaker for when you do arrive on the first day (food is also a good icebreaker ).
Also I’m not sure if all accommodation is like this but in the accommodation I’ve just left (back at home now for summer), there were 16 of us, but this was split into 2 different flats on the same floor of the accommodation building, so we got to know them pretty well and bubbled up with them when pretty much everyone went home for half term and didn’t return because of the lockdown. Even if you don’t get on with your flatmates you could always ask to hang out with neighbouring flats if your accommodation is similar setup.
