Hey y’all after 7 months of rejections, I got into my top two choices of LEEDS Conservatoire and the ICMT for musical theatre. Once I’d gotten over the high of Actually Being Accepted Somewhere Good, I’m plagued by uncertainty as to which would be best for me. Could use help and your opinions on both schools.
Here are a few contextual things that might help:
- I need a very supportive environment because of my own crippling self worth and anxiety. So definitely a supportive environment where they really encourage you instead of an environment where they try to pressure/berate you into performing better. This also means that a close knit Uni community is kind of what I’m looking for, and I feel as though ICMT students are older and more mature while LEEDS is more of a conventional BA environment. ICMT doesn’t provide student housing, it’s all independent.
- I’m an EU citizen and don’t think I want to remain in the UK for my entire career. The ICMTs selling point is that it provides a lot of international exposure, while LEEDS is obviously UK centric. I’m wondering if that would be just as possible to do on my own later on? Or is this really a rare opportunity?
- The ICMT would require me to move from country to country every 6 months during the program, which I’ve done for the past few years and I’m sick and tired of moving. I want to be settled somewhere. But is training in other countries worth the sacrifice? I believe we would still be learning the same curriculum and practicing in the studio all day, and because the ICMT only does 1 final musical which is at the end of the entire duration of your program, I’m not certain if there will be much interaction with that country’s theatre industry anyway.
- I want a BA degree for backup. I would received a BA from LEEDS in 3 years (3 years in person while training), and a BA from ICMT in 3.5 years. (2 years practical intensive training and 1.5 years online education)
- LEEDS or ICMT? Which one have you really seen alumni for? What do you know about either programs?
Thanks in advance, I appreciate all the opinions and advice I can get!
