In going from (30) to (31), should the final term in (31) read V^nu?

If not why has it become V^mu?

I've been staring at it for ages and I think it has to do with the fact that the derivative has its index "downstairs", whilst everything else has its index "upstairs".
As far as I can tell it shouldn't be mu either, but lambda.

Yes, I think so. Otherwise you have three mus (two upstairs, one downstairs) which we all know is a Bad Thing.

Notice however the form of the connection (for example the Christoffel Connection).

Indices should match up on both sides of the equation with the exception of repeated indices which play no part in this requirement (since you can rename this dummy variable to anything you like).
