Is anyone else considering/have previously considered applying for the natural science course only at Cambridge and then for specific science courses at other unis? I really like the look of the course at Cambridge and have grades to make a competitive application but only like the look of the course there and wondered if this is a terrible idea?

I did exactly this, applied for natural sciences at Cambridge and biology everywhere else. Still managed to get an offer, just make sure you make use of the SAQ

What sort of things should I mention on there? A lot of comments on tsr are just saying to ignore it and I'm a bit confused

I don't think this is that uncommon. For starters unlike most other natural sciences courses, at Cambridge you will eventually specialise in one area normally, and so usually I'm the end you have what is essentially the same depth as a single honours course in one area, with added breadth from first and second year modules from other fields (usually in support of your main area of focus).

Also as above they have the optional additional personal statement on the SAQ to let you discuss any particular aspects of the Cambridge course that interest you which wouldn't be applicable for the other courses you're applying to. However this additional personal statement is purely optional and I doubt it would make a difference if you didn't write anything in it but your personal statement was focused on one science.

I applied for natsci at Cambridge and Biology everywhere else. I didn't use the SAQ, since I plan to do the biology modules at Cambridge anyway - I got an offer. I wouldn't be too worried about it, but if you plan to take chemistry modules it's probably advisable to write something in there about chemistry.

I applied for NatSci at cam and physics or theoretical physics everywhere else. My PS was all about physics with a tiny bit of maths and I got in. I did write about other sciences in my SAQ tho. I’d say the majority of cam natscis applied for single sciences everywhere else

All I did was write a bit about why I liked the course, and also some interests in chemistry and earth sciences I didn’t mention in my personal statement because it was biology focused. As others have said it’s optional, but they will read it, because a large part of my interview was based off my SAQ response.

So basically say if you’re keen on other sciences you can use the SAQ to tell them about it
