I did, as I knew I wanted to defer even if I got my insurance

You don't have to - but obviously if you Firm rejects you and you go to your Insurance you will be going this year.
Btw, its always safer to ask for deferral *before* Results Day - that is the point when many Unis will say no-more deferrals.
