Free DNA nucleotides bind to the exposed template strand of the DNA, that has been unzipped by DNA helicase, through complementary base pairing. This basically replicates the DNA and the two new strands have one parent (old) strand and a new strand. Im not sure if that is what you were asking, but basically that is their role - to bind and synthesise new DNA
