Which Uni is the Best for masters in mechanical engineering?

Actually I applied for numerous universities in UK for my masters in mechanical engineering and management. I initially preferred top ranked unis but some of my friends insisted not to look at uni rankings only. So luckily, I am hugely confused to choose. I do have offer letters from Cardiff uni, Uni of Liverpool, Uni of Sheffield, Queens Belfast, Coventry, Loughborough. I do prefer career prospects as key element. Can anyone help me out with it???
Hello
I am at cov at the moment! But I study aerospace engineering. Cov is really nice.
They have just built a new engineering building and have a really good lecturer to student ratio.
It wasn't one of my top choices until I visited it and became my top choice
The library is right next to the engineering building and is quite modern
So on the ground floor you have general books and sigma
Sigma is a specialist math help centre and one of the only universities to have this
Then first floor is silent study
Second floor is quiet study
Third floor is louder but have whiteboard walls and like a fake amphitheater which is cool.
Plenty of it resources
Also cov gets you access to all the uni apps on your computerso that good (Windows is the best for cov, do not buy a mac)
I am on placement so haven't actually used the new engineering building
But it's got lots of study spaces, even a kitchenette if you want to have a hot lunch in between lecturers and specialist labs
The regular engineering building has loads of lecturer halls and 3 floors and theta
Theta is a room where the lecturers are required to go for 2 sessions where you can drop in and ask any questions, lecturer or coursework based
And there is a starbucks
Cov city is alright, plenty of shops everything in walking distanced. Train station and bus station pretty centrally which transport to anywhere. And a lovely market, icerink and stuff. The societies are nice as well! Lots of clubs and pubs

Generally the top ranked at Loughborough and Leeds and camb.
I got offers from Leeds and lboro but rejected them becuase I loved cov. And I went to a camb open day and they are very traditional and I just didn't like that so I didn't bother applying.
Not looking at uni ranking is a good thing they change every year! I would say get an accredited course though, anything not accredited don't do.
And do a placement, experience is just as important as your degree. Some places will still bill you for going on placement but cov doesn't. And massively supports placement.

How do you have offers from 6 unis?! I thought you could only apply to 5

Loughboriugh is lovely, very green! They have lots of specialist rooms too and lovely social spaces and bags of reputation but that's all I really know.
I've heard the town is a bit rubbish tho

Sheffield is lovely, beautiful city their engineering building looks very pretty and again they have some specialist rooms which I liked more than lboro and their lecturers seem better than lboro

I just got the sense lboro was oxbridge rejects with a chip in their shoulder and a huge ego. And the lecturers were interested in grades rather than student and places like sheff and cov were the opposite.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions feel free to ask. I don't know anything about the other unis you've mentioned

Sheffield & Loughborough probably have the best reputations on this list for mechanical engineering.

I think the career prospects for engineering should be fine from any of them.

Hey @anandg1999,

Congrats on receiving an offer letter from Coventry!

Engineering at Coventry University is quite well known as Coventry University is most often known for its engineering courses, as well as automotive courses (due to its links with certain car companies). I have a friend who is currently studying Mechanical Engineering and would be willing to provide some insight if you're interested?

Let me know if you're interested so I can provide you with a more tailored response!

Hi @anandg1999 :hello:

Congratulations on all your offers and for receiving an offer to study at Loughborough!

There's lots of factors to consider when it comes to making a university decision. Perhaps have a think and weigh up the importance of each to you and what it is you want from a university, to help narrow down your decision  These factors could include...

Course - look carefully at the topics and modules you will study on the programme. Would you be happy studying all of them? A degree is a big commitment, so it's important that you will be happy studying the course for its entire duration. You might also consider the course's reputation, accreditation, facilities and career opportunities post-study.

Due to their extensive knowledge and skills, graduates of our Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering programmes are highly sought after by industry and commerce worldwide. Our graduates have gone on to undertake a variety of roles at companies including Accenture, Airbus, BAE Systems, Caterpillar, Cisco, EDF Energy, E.ON, Ford, Hewlett Packard, Huawei, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Rolls-Royce, Siemens AG, and Tata Steel, to name but a few.

Student support - take a look at the support services available at the university to ensure they have everything you need to succeed during your studies and beyond. In terms of employability, Loughborough ranked 1st in the UK and in the top 20 globally for employer-student connections in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020, due to the relationships we have developed with all kinds of businesses from across the world. We also have a superb Careers Network team that can help you develop your skills, understand your strengths and explore your career options across a wide range of industries, both in the UK and internationally.

Our services and resources include:

one-to-one advice and drop-ins with professional careers consultants

workshops on career planning and job hunting

guidance and advice from employers and alumni

links to thousands of job vacancies and internships

specialist support and advice for international students

practice job interviews and assessment centres

access to information, career planning tools and further resources via our comprehensive website.

Location - Would you prefer a city or a university market town like Loughborough? What are the transport links like if you want to travel? Loughborough is well-connected by road, rail and air, and offers everything you need as a student and more within easy reach, offering a friendly, close-knit community environment.

Campus - linked to location, what sort of campus would you prefer? At Loughborough, we have a stunning 440-acre single-site campus to call home, with everything you need as a student and more, including green open spaces, landscaped gardens, woodlands, academic buildings, accommodation, sports and leisure facilities, the Students' Union, and a variety of restaurants, shops, bars and cafes.

Accommodation - would you prefer to live on or off campus, and what options are there? At Loughborough, we have three self-catered halls of residence available for postgraduates, either on or a short walk from campus. There's also a wide range of private accommodation available too within easy reach of campus.

Student experience - what extra-curricular activities and opportunities are there for you to get involved with to meet new people and develop your skills? For example, we have lots of opportunities available with the Students' Union, LU Arts and Loughborough Sport.

I hope this helps! You'll find lots more information at our online prospectus, including reasons to study here and student stories. You can also find independent student reviews on StudentCrowd.

All the best!

Hi @anandg1999

University of Sheffield alumnus here  The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Sheffield is one of the UK’s leading departments in the field - ranking amongst the UK's top five Mechanical Engineering departments for research excellence, and achieving consistently high student satisfaction.

It has great facilities - in 2015, the University opened the Diamond building, an £81m investment home to extensive teaching laboratories for engineering students. This year has also seen the refurbishment of the department’s original home, which is becoming the new £50m Engineering Heartspace development, complete with state-of-the-art laboratories, workshops and postgraduate research space. The new facilities include a dedicated employability hub, designed to help businesses from the Sheffield City Region, across the UK and around the world to meet face-to-face with engineering students to aid collaborations. The facilities will also make industrial placements, internships, skills sessions and graduate opportunities more accessible than ever for students.

Chatting to current students on the course would be a great way to decide - there's two MEng Mechanical Engineering students on Sheffield's Chat to Us page, who I'm sure would be happy to answer any questions you have or just to chat about what the course is like. Just select Mechanical Engineering from the Subject dropdown. There's also Will's Student profile - he studied MSc Mechanical Engineering & Industrial Management.

Hope that helps! Feel free to ask me any questions about Sheffield

Hi there,

I am also a current Coventry University student. I'm a media and communications student. I've had a good time in recent years. I was very impressed by the course and its accompanying learning materials. I'm having a great time in Coventry as well.

Coventry is a friendly city for students. Everything I need is within walking distance of here, and the cost of living is reasonable, so I've decided to pursue my master's degree here!
