I am starting to think I need to save money, I have a savings account with next to nothing in it, I am 21. People this age have around £10,000 in savings so I hear. I do earn money but I have been very much enjoying my youth. How old are you and how much do you have in saved up?

I have it going towards a mortgage. The property is rented out to private tenants, which pays most of it.

A good rule of thumb is to allocate 50% of your income on things you absolutely need, 30% on luxuries you want and 20% on short and longer term savings. Of course application of this rule does depend on having sufficient income. Regular, every month, saving in to a decent long term investment vehicle is an extremely good habit, bringing security and ability to buy the larger things you need.

25, about £15k atm - this is from basically nothing 3 years ago as that's when I finished uni! I save £500/month which is just over 25% of my monthly salary. I've also rented that entire time, though not anywhere especially cheap (Cambridge prices for ya) - I'm not a massive spender so I find it pretty easy to save that and could save more if I wanted.

You should definitely start building up savings, especially if you're living at home. Setting up direct debits to come out the day or so after payday is really helpful - my savings go out, as do money (50%) for rent, bills and food shop into joint account with my partner, automatically. Then whatever is left is the rest of my spending for the month! Every couple of months, if some amount has built up I'll add that to savings too.

Some of them probably do.

Most of them probably do not. If the majority of people you know aged 21 are saying this, then either you went to an elite school or university, or most of them are talking sh*t to show off.

19, I'm currently sitting on 15k ish, took the plunge and invested majority of my 1st semester maintenance and grants into Ethereum last year, cashed out before the dip in May. Now working full time before 2nd year starts so hopefully I can sort out 2nd year accommodation, will drop savings a bit if I don't have enough. I will also probably set the rest aside for more investing but this time with less volatility :^_^:

How much is inherited/because of living rent free/low rent is always my first q.

Matched betting through university, working hard and investing my salary. I say working like a beast, most of it was spent in front of a screen.

Made most of it through investing.

Fair point. For me, I've got no inheritance and I'm living at home. I'm still paying my mum rent but it's barely anything (only £50 a month). I have money from student loan/self employed earnings. Atm I'm not working a job but I've worked many in the past. I wouldn't count any of my money as savings as I haven't really put anything aside. It's just money I've got in the bank.
