Hi I've been put in the Fisher building in a 2 bedroom set. Is it any nice? The building that is.

I thought they were only giving them to grads this year?... Unless you are a grad.
To give you an idea of Fischer: 2nd years tend to be falling over themselves to share a 2 bedroom set with someone else, so having a 2 bedroom set to yourself is a definite bonus. The building is getting on for 100 years old. It's not the most attractive of the college buildings (by no means ugly), but the facilities are generally very good (the exception being T staircase) with en suite and generally large kitchens. I have been assured that even T staircase has its benefits: the lack of an en suite makes the main room much larger.
I could go on, but I'm basically trying to say that you have got a very good deal. You should be pleased.

Yeh it sounds good, the only thing that worries me is that as you said i'm probably not gonna be with any undergrad first years. And yeh apparently I'm in the t staircase which is a bit annoying i guess, but I'm not too bothered about lack of ensuite.
I can't imagine they'd stick a first year on their own like that, so I imagine they'll be four of you. Should be a nice little community. Plus, the rooms up there are would be good for entertaining, so your friends would probably rather come to your room than you have to go to theirs. As far as non-cripps locations go, it's pretty good.

And while I'm here, I feel I should advertise a bit:
Anybody interested in/generally curious about giving rowing a go next term? I'm meant to be organising novice rowing this year, so if you have any questions and/or need a bit of convincing, let me know. I promise it's great fun and a great way to meet people within college (The majority of the year at least give it a try).
Oh god, the boat club starts their relentless drive already. :P

Shi: Seriously, non-mixed sinks aren't a big deal. They're the norm in the UK, certainly for bathroom/bedroom sinks. If you're washing your face you let the water mix in the basin, if you're washing your hands/brushing your teeth then you only really need hot or cold water. I'm not on Q myself, but it's by no means the worst staircase. All of the staircases in Dokett have their own advantages and disadvantages (this is part of the reason that I like the place), yours has more larger rooms than any other staircase but some of them are a little dark and a few of them have an unfortunate view of a brick wall. The laundry room isn't actually on Q, but in a little building which is next to it. You won't get disturbed by it at all.

It does seem a little strange that they assigned you fisher rooms, because the JCR was told that they were reserving them for grad students. What Johnrambo said is probably right, though, they wouldn't stick you there all alone. In any case, Cripps is a stone's throw away and the rooms there are pretty beautiful.

I was pooled if that makes any difference so maybe (but hopefully not) it was the only room left. I would definitely feel out of place if I was the only undergrad there.

Hello to all,

I think I'm one of the few international students on this forum. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and I'll be reading Phys Nat Sci come October.

Just a quick question to those who've already gotten their accomodation and other details (I haven't received mine). When were your letters posted? Usually the mail takes a week to get here, so if more time than that has elapsed, I'll know that the letter has been lost.

Anyway, I guess I'll see you all soon!

Think mine got sent off on the 30th of Aug--though I had to ring them up and ask as I got paranoid that it got lost or something. Maybe you should try ringing up the Admissions Office--they can confirm whether or not they've sent it.

Mine was sent on the 3rd of September and I got it by the 7th (but I don't live in England).
P.S. So there are at least two international students: you and I

I agree, that's not a big deal but mixed sinks are more comfortable so maybe I'll try to link them somehow. Certainly a view of a brick wall doesn't sound nice... but I'm prepared for the worse. That way I will not be very much disappointed
Thanks for your answer.
To give the other side of the coin, some of the rooms in Q have a pretty spectacular view. A few over the rooftops of King's towards the chapel, one has a massive bay window looking down over King's Lane (which is hardly picturesque[1], but there's something to be said for a window that size regardless of its view imho. There were two there that I was tempted to go for myself, and afaik have remained untaken by 2nd and 3rd years. Fingers crossed!

[1] Actually it's pretty hideous by anybody's standards.

Do you know what you did to me? I will be hoping now to get this nice, large, sunny room but probably I'll end up in a dark hollow with a view of a wall  That's cruel

And what about guests? Are they really allowed to stay for only three nights in the college? Is college so strict about it?

As with most college regulations regarding accommodation, that particular rule is very often broken. I have a friend who kept his girlfriend in his room for two two-week periods. I don't know how strict they are, but they don't go out of their way to find out about things like that. Although, having said that, change may well be in the air.
I'm fairly sure -that- regulation will remain being far from strictly enforced. To be honest, I imagine that having guests for more than a few days at a time would make studying pretty difficult.
What sort of people usually apply for Queens? Are there a lot of maths/science students?
err, I think we're pretty evenly ballanced tbh. I think possibly slightly more sciency than average, but nothing that means anything or that you notice.
All sorts of people apply from Queens'... it's difficult to summarise five hundred people into a "sort", really.

I wouldn't put it past him to be reading this. His centre of gravity is very low, and if you live near his room the whistling will drive you mad.
