Enzyme A and enzyme B are involved in controlling cell division in pancreatic cancer cells.
Most cancer cells produce enzyme A and enzyme B.
Some ppl have a gene mutation that stops cancer cells producing enzyme B.
Scientists have developed a drug that inhibits enzyme A.
The drug is given to pancreatic cancer patients who have the gene mutation that stops cancer cells producing enzyme B.
The drug only targets cancer cells

a)Explain why the drug can be used to treat pancreatic cancer in patients with the gene mutation

b)Explain why the drug cannot be used to treat pancreatic cancer in a patient that produces both enzyme A and enzyme B

a) MOST cancer cells produce both enzymes A and B. Those with the gene mutation ONLY produce enzyme A as the mutation inhibits the production of enzyme B. Both enzymes are involved with cell division (growth) of cancer cells. If Enzyme B is inhibited already and the drug only inhibits Enzyme A; by giving it to patients with the mutation the cancer cell growth (cell division process) is inhibited as there are no enzymes available to catalyse the cell division process.

b) The reason you cannot treat a patient that produces enzymes A and B with this drug is because the drug only inhibits Enzyme A. The patient will continue to produce Enzyme B and therefore cell division of cancer cells will continue to occur. It would therefore not be an effective treatment for patients without the gene mutation.
