Hi, I just had the interview a few days ago-
They asked me to explain how to divide fractions and why 2 negatives multiplied make a positive.
They also had an A level style maths paper for their maths task around 10 qs- most the qs were abstract and show your working out type of questions- e.g square has a circle inside that has a square inside, show that the ratio of the large square to the small square is 1:1/2 type questions. Is 15.99recurring/3.99recurring =4, less than or more than 4, what is your proof etc.
Hope this helps!

Hi, oh amazing. I hope it went well for you, and you get some good news from them soon.

Thank you so much for the help. How did you find the A Level questions? Do you feel like you got most of the answers? Because those two questions seem quite hard for me to get my head around haha.

Also, what was the written task like?
Also, during the interview, what kind of questions were they asking about teaching and why you want to teach with KCL?

Thank you so much for the help!

The a level style maths tasks were difficult for me as I didn’t prepare at all. My mentor made it seem like it would be a walk in the park and I was complacent.
The interview questions were ‘Why teaching, why this age group and why maths’ and then ‘why now’

Good luck! I'm sure you smashed it!
Thank you so much for the help!!

I did my interview with them a few weeks ago, one of the two women was very rude- kept interupting me and speaking in a very patronising way as though I was a child, despite being a long time graduate myself, the other woman very kind and I think she could sense the hostility from the other- something to note and potentially prepare for. The maths questions were relatively easy:

1.

Why should pupils learn maths (long answer question maximum A4 side working)

2.

If Josh stands 6 meters from a lampost and Rueben is 8 meters, show their position from the lampost ensuring a 10 meter distance (something along those lines)

3.

A square is inscribed in a circle which is inscribed in a square, show the ration between the 2 squares is 1:1/2

4.

There was a distance and time graph and you're asked to describe what could be the changes (e.g. is it a car driving or a person running)

5.

Simple transformation you had to draw of a quadratic f(x)-> -f(x+1)

6.

Find the area of a hexagon from the inside of a triangle, in surds

7.

Find the number of wooden logs that make up a wooden panel (using area and length measurements)

8.

An inequality question with surds

9.

Is 15.99 divided by 13.99 equal to, bigger than, smaller than 4 (theres a reccuring symboll on the 99s)

The interview question was "why do you want to be a teacher" and then they ask the questions you prepare i.e. the fraction and negative numbers- for me personally the ruder woman got up from her chair and rubbed off my work in what felt like she was teaching me and constantly interupting me (very patronising). The last question I was asked was more specific to the personal statement I submitted.

A key thing to note is that for the teaching segment it is not a role play, which was emphasised by the rude woman although she was acting like child with her interuptions.

Something to note is that only 30 people will secure a place for their Maths PGCE so do not feel upset if you don't make it past this phase, I have since withdrawn my application before I heard back from them and accepted my UCL offer instead. I hope this is helpful.

Hi, thank you for giving so much detail on your interview.
That's made me a bit nervous now, but at least I am more prepared for what I am going to face.

Did you feel as though you would have gotten an offer based off what happened?

Congratulations on your UCL offer!!
