Q: How does Russell present attitudes towards education in Blood Brothers?

Will Russell uses the contrasting systems of education in order to convey the impact education can have on our lives. Russell portrays this through Mickey and Edwards' school lives.

Throughout the musical, Russell shows that wealth brings different educational opportunities, which leads to a different lifestyle. Edward and Mickey are educated differently. One goes on to university and has a successful career , the other takes on a factory job making boxes. Redundancy and lack of opportunity then lead Mickey to crime, drug addiction and depression. Without a better education Russell is saying that Mickey had few options, and so we are asked to see Mickey’s mistakes in a sympathetic light.Education also shapes the lives of Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Lyons as Mrs Johnstone falls into poverty without her husband as she has no education to provide her a means of escape hence picking up jobs such as cleaning. However, Mrs Lyons has a middle-class education. Despite this, she is still not self-reliant, suggesting that women's traditional roles limit their freedom. Ultimately, this shows how education provides us with different opportunities in life.

Russell presents the attitudes towards education for the rich through Edward. This is clearly shown when his teacher says “Talk of Oxbridge”. The use of the statement demonstrates how oxbridge is a normal conversation topic amongst the rich. Evidently, this highlights the different expectations of the classes.Furthermore, the word “oxbridge” relates to the idea of higher education which shows the privilege of the middle class. This encourages the audience to think about how different the expectations
are. Therefore this shows how the rich can easily access higher education.

Overall, Russell could be using this moment to show the audience the reality and affect education has on people.

idk what else to add, idek why my teacher had to choose education cuz u cant rlly find that much stuff on it tbh

you could mention about mickey working at the dole, and Edward working as a council man.

you could also mention about how the characters are portrayed, such as; Edward being well spoken and Mickey being the opposite.

you could potentially mention about Mrs Lyons and Mrs Johnstone reactions to Edward and mickey being suspended and how it relates to class. you could expand on this and say how about their reactions to their educations --> mickey doesn't care and just leaves, and you can assume that Edward is probably shocked as he is never in trouble

i hope this helps a bit

edit: it looks good though
