I got emailed saying that my faculty had nominated me for ertegun so it had been decided at a faculty level and i am being interviewed by two people from the faculty of oriental studies - one just an academic and the other also a oriental academic but also the representative for the faculty of os at the ertegun house. so basically i think it is quite faculty based at this point at least. i also got my email about an hour after i got my offer.

Hi congrats on the interview! May I ask if you applied for masters or DPhil?

Ah okay! So super faculty based then. Goodness, I hope I get put forward for other funding but the lack of faculty email is making me feel like it’s unlikely!

Have any English applicants heard back from Ertegun?

Reply 1786

Congrats to everyone getting interview invites for ertegun!!!! I am really happy for everyone bit I dont understand why the Oriental Studies fac cant send us our decisions already and then deal with funding like come on we've been waiting so long!!

I just cracked and sent a mail to the interdisciplinary humanities department asking about any updates for the MSt in WGSS. I know that there are some fellow applicants in this thread, I will keep you posted

Hey everyone!

Having read (skimmed is probably more appropriate) this forum's posts, no one else seems to have shared their DPhil Mathematics timeline, so I will share mine here. Also, if there are any other Mathsies, please make yourselves known

Applied: January 7th on deadline day
Offer to interview: January 20th
Interview: February 3rd (Went badly)
Upload button: Still there, but I can share some knowledge on the post-interview procedure.

I was told at the end of my interview that my application was going to be scored on few factors, ranked based on scores, and then sent to a committee for final checks (neither of the professors knew when the committee was meeting but they tentatively said a couple of weeks, if I remember correctly).

Now, in true maths sense -- out of the n applicants, they have enough funding for x < n interviewees. If your score lands you in rank 1 to x, then you receive funding and an offer.

From the way this was said, it seemed like they only offer funded places... albeit they did not mention places for those who are not funded, so there could be some other procedure involved.

So maybe there’s hope for English yet then!

Maybe... I haven't found any posts from previous years of English applicants saying they'd been interviewed for Ertegun, so I'm not sure if the English faculty generally sends invites early or not.

Honestly, I’m not holding out hope for Ertegun at this point. Hoping some other source of funding comes my way.

Do you know how much is x/n?
We are in the same boat. I saw from Gradcafe that there are two offers was sent on Feb 18th.
Also my upload button has not disappeared yet.

I do not know the values of x or n. Although, based on the following from an FOI request - https://www.admissionreport.com/university-of-oxford/dphil-phd-mathematics - you can be pretty sure that \frac{x}{n} < 0.2.

Now, since people have already been given offers, if there is one central committee that finalises the rankings, then we can be sure that they have already met. If this is the case, I make the bold assumption that they will work down the list from rank 1 giving out the offers. Although, logistically this would be difficult if there is one central committee because the ranks of students will be across all research groups and I am pretty sure the offers come from the research group. Therefore, it may not be done chronologically from a central committee level, rather a blanket statement of, "This list of students can be made offers" may have been made and now we are waiting on the individual research groups. However, there is another possibility.

There are many different research groups in the mathematics department, so it could be that individual research groups have committees (this might not be all groups, but may be some, as opposed to a mathematics-central one) and that the two people from GradCafe have their DPhil associated with research groups who have already had their committee meeting? Akin to my previous point of rankings, each research group may be given a list of students and their corresponding ranks and work through the list from the top to the bottom.

I would love to know your thoughts on the above. Sorry, it is so long-winded.

That being said, my final bullet points:

The research group associated with your DPhil may not have started handing out offers yet. Which is your research group?

If the committee is central, then they make be working down the list from rank 1 so the decision could be imminent.

Logistically it is unlikely for there to be a central committee AND a chronological release of offers.

I think you're right! From the Ertegun website, it seems that invitations were sent by faculties (not the Ertegun committee). And the website also says this year the (first batch of) decisions will be out be the end of March.
