Hi,
Im practising exam papers for AQA Sociology and i am having trouble with an essay in FAMILIES.
Could anybody tell me whether Functionalists would agree with the New right in saying-
The maternity and Paternity policy under the employment protection act 1975 (women would not lose their job upon becoming pregnant) is bad for society because (NRview) women should not be working but fulfilling their role as a traditional housewife.
I am conflicted because whilst functionalists support the nuclear family ideology and the 4 key functions where women would stay at home and socialise their child, they also think that everybody has their place in society (women should do jobs such as textiles in factories/receptionists etc [“non manly jobs”].
Would this conflict with the NR/ func view that women should be trad wives because functionalists also say that society needs women to do the jobs that men dont want?
Am i just waffling and confusing myself?
Thank you in advance

You’re correct in thinking that the Functionalist approach would agree with the New Right view. Think about what Parson’s two functions of the family were. However, you could also go on to say that other functionalists would disagree. Think about Murdoch’s four functions of the family.
If you need any further help, let me know!
