A thought-provoking question! I imagine it would create a complex problem for heterotrophic organisms. Perhaps more symbiotic relationships would evolve? For example, a greater number of heterotrophs may develop symbiotic relationships with chemolithotrophs (with relationships resembling those seen in Giant Tube Worms). However, could the evolutionary development of these relationships be constrained by environmental factors? Additionally, it can be argued that chemotrophs themselves can be autotrophic, so would this hypothetical scenario also remove these organisms from the equation? Let me know your thoughts!
