Drama for gcse

Hi, I have to choose my GCSE’s in a few months and I have pretty much decided on doing french, history and one creative subject however I can’t decide between art and drama. I was pulled aside in my Drama Class and was told I was good and should do it for GCSE’s and have been getting good grades on it. In art I enjoy the relaxation but even though they are still good grades they aren’t as good as my drama. I really want to study law with french for uni but I’m not sure if they would except me at uni if I did dram GCSE ( I know that they mainly look at A levels but still unsure if the GCSE subject choices would affect the decisions). I need help as I love both subjects….

Hi,

That is a pretty good question. I would recommend choosing subjects from these which will open many doors for you in future and it relates to what you will do in the future. So, I won't give a specific recommendation but since you like both of them. Choose 1 which will help you in what you will do for your passion and your career. Nevertheless, You will have to do 1 so you are going to have to sacrifice 1 of them.

Hope this helps.

I'm currently doing drama so would be happy to answer any questions (doing edexcel, but I imagine the course would be similar for AQA and others). I believe that the main part of the art gcse is doing coursework and actually making art. Drama's a bit different. You obviously have to do a bit of acting (both devising and from a script) but more of the GCSE is based on coursework (talking about how you made your devised performance), evaluating a piece of live theatre, and studying a play and deciding how you would act it/design it/direct it.

The performance stuff is quite fun (and you're in groups) and coursework's not that bad but you really have to enjoy theatre for the others. To be fair, we studied our play on Zoom (so couldn't act) and had to watch a recording of a stage play... Drama's fun but it was a bit different to my previous drama lessons (where we'd only done acting) - if you teacher has confidence in you, I'd say take drama but maybe have a look at the specifications beforehand for both subjects to see which one appeals more.

Hello, thank you for your question.

Myself, I have studied both Art and Drama at GCSE. Overall I have loved both subjects; although in long-term I have found Drama GCSE to be more beneficial to me, since it has considerably improved my public speaking confidence and writing skills - something that I needed to work on the most. However, the Art GCSE has definitely facilitated my ability to reflect on my personal interests and experiences and to communicate them effectively through various works - also a very important skill to have. Furthermore, both subjects have developed my creative thinking skills, analytical skills and have thought me the importance of promoting the freedom of expression; in the context of all the thoughts, ideas and perspectives that one may hold. Hence, certainly it is difficult to choose between these two subjects. However, what I would advise for you to do is to think carefully about which skills & abilities you wish/need to develop further at this point? For instance, would you benefit more from gaining a bit more of an experience working with other people in groups, developing your public-speaking and writing skills (more likely to be encouraged by Drama than Art GCSE); or would you benefit more from doing an independent quiet Art work where you may have more of an opportunity to self-reflect and express your own opinions and perspectives?

In terms of the future university applications, it is unlikely that this choice would have any impact on the outcome; unless you are applying specifically for Drama or Art studies. However, even then if you have studied either subject at A level, the absence of GCSE is unlikely to make much of a difference. Although, of course, the A Level studies are likely to be easier if you have a prior experience in the relevant subject. Thus, taking into consideration your likely future study & career plans might also aid you in making this decision.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions I might be able to answer .

Hi I’m currently doing drama but know a lot of people doing art and this is what I heard

Drama- there is a lot of fun acting we are also doing scripts were we act in one and take production role in the other. I would say that there is quite a bit of out of school work e.g learning lines, finishing script etc but if you are willing to work hard I am finding it really fun

Art- from what I have heard my friends got a lot of homework in the class doing drawing out of class. Also a lot of people hated the written side to it which is something to keep in mind

For uni each looks as good they both show a more creative side to you

I would just say choose which one you would be more excited in doing and would feel u would work harder

Hi, I’m so sorry for the late reply (2 years), I did end up choosing art and I actually had the opportunity to take drama as well however I ended up not choosing it. Thank you so much for all your amazing advice, this was really lovely for me to read as I’ve almost finished my GCSEs now. I’ll be done on Friday next week 🙂. I absolutely loved the art gcse and will be taking it as an A-Level, thankfully I think I made the right decision choosing it.
