40 minutes doesn't sound an unreasonable commute to me, lots of people commute for that length of time. It used to take me around 35 mins or even longer during rush hour to make it to uni by bus, and now some of my placement sites can be over an hour away.

Could you put up with it until you're qualified? What about perhaps getting a cheap b&b for a few nights whilst you're on the further placement? Or perhaps consider starting out before / after rush hour, and take breakfast / some dinner with you to have whilst on site? That way you can get up early to set off for the site and get ready there rather than the other way around, and in the evenings sit back and chill in the staff room, get some work done, and set off later.
