Not necessarily, but it depends exactly on how it's going to be used. If you are going to be using the exercises from the textbook for assignments then often these change between editions and you might need to get the exact one advised. If it's just for reference and independent study then usually older editions will have largely the same material, although bear in mind the pagination will likely be different.

Note it's usually unnecessary to buy textbooks at all for UK university study, as your library typically will have any required textbooks and UK degrees rarely have courses designed specifically around a particular textbook.

thank you for your reply. i wanted to start revising the subject before i return in september so it would mostly be for independent study. My loan is going to be very small so i couldn’t afford to buy loads of textbooks but i feel i will struggle with this module so i’m going to start looking into it early

If it's just for self-study an older used edition should be fine. Do check to see what the differences between the newest edition and that are (usually you can find people noting these online), as while typically the changes are just minor or organisational sometimes chapters may be introduced/omitted between editions so some material might be in there that you don't need/want to know, or one particular topic might not be in that one.

if you are going to get the more expensive one i would recommend using a service like slugbooks so you can make sure its as cheap as you can get it for
