With weeks before my test, my instructor only told me that I should look in mirrors just before setting off again at traffic lights (all three mirrors) and when joining a new road each time I have to do the same.

Luckily I do all three, but I can't believe he'd only told me then when he had months to tell me. He told me it's a fault if I don't do it. He wasn't clear about whether it was all three mirrors or just centre and the appropriate side one. Anyone got any tips?

I passed my test about 2 weeks ago and I only looked in the central one when joining a new road. If I could give any tips it is to just make clear to the instructor you are looking and aware of everything more than anything. Mirror signal manoeuvre of course and don't worry if you stall, it's only a minor unless you create a problem out of it.

All we expect is;
Left and/or centre mirror when turning left
Right and/or centre mirror when turning right
Left and center mirror when pulling up on left
Right and centre mirror when moving off from the left
Left and centre mirror when moving into left lane
Right and center mirror when moving into right lane
Centre mirror when stopping for another road user

If you struggle to remember then feel free to check all mirrors at all times but it can look a bit amateurish.
